I don't have time at the moment to provide more info, but this page locks up as soon as I open it:

URL: http://www.smartmoney.com/cfscripts/Dir ... String=PHO
OS: Vista
Firefox: 2.0.0.1

... and it works in whatever version of IE came with this Vista install.

Note: There's a Java applet on this page. Recently on a Quicken support page there was a Java applet that also repeatedly crashed Firefox on this box. Hmmm....

... and here's the apparent cause of the problem ...

java version "1.6.0-oem"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0-oem-b104)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.6.0-oem-b104, mixed mode, sharing)

I went to www.java.com and even attempting to detect my JRE would cause Firefox to hang.

After restarting, I went to www.java.com and did the manual installation. Now everything works happily.

java version "1.6.0"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0-b105)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.6.0-b105, mixed mode, sharing)

This is probably documented somewhere and I just missed it. Hope this helps someone out there...

Had the same problem on my new Dell. What you said here has fixed it for me. Unfortunately i just lost a longer blogger post to a firefox crash though. This brand new Dell arrived in a pretty poor state!

OEM Versions are becoming more and more widespread and the crash still occurs on Firefox 2.0.0.11 build.
Has anyone found a proper workaround to detect/avoid these xxx up versions ?

Watch your language, LTronic. It's not allowed here, even disguised. I have edited it out of your post.

You tell me to watch my language while an user has "VistaSux" in his nickname... no comment...

Anyway, my question is still valid. These OEM versions are causing a real nightmare into software business, whenever you want to deploy an applet is becoming a real hell because of firefox unable to open the license popups included in these builds.

My own list of "OEM Java" manufacturers include Dell, Fujistu-Siemens, Sony, Acer, HP and probably more.
Are you really going to let all those people buying computer for them to have an half-broken experience while using Firefox ?
Any fix planned ?

I was having simular problems and found a possible solution.
Right click on the Firefox Icon. Click Properties > Click Compatibility tab.
Put a check mark beside "Run this program in compatibility mode for:
Then select "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)" in the drop down list.
Near the bottom of the window put a check mark beside "Run this program as an administrator".
By doing this I seemed to have stopped the locking up that was happening with my own computer. Each time you run Firefox the computer will ask for your permission but at least you can use Firefox.
