SOLVED! Cannot play audio streams Windows Media Edition

Post by hopworks »

I have Windows XP Media Edition with WMP version 11, and Firefox 2.0.0.1

I cannot play audio streams from various radio stations offering streaming via their websites.
I get the all-too-familiar Missing Plugin alert and when I try to use the Plugin Finder Service, I get No suitable plugins were found, Unknown Plugin (application/x-mplayer2).
I have been researching this since I started using firefox on my notebook. I've read through numerous forums, links from the KB, and nothing works, or nothing covers my versions listed above.
I found a few fixes, but they require using WMP version 9/10 and both of those versions are incompatible with my version of Windows. The only version that is compatible is WMP 11. I have uninstalled and reinstalled that software three times without success.

Two sites I want to listen to are

http://www.98kupd.com/player/default.asp
http://espnradio.espn.go.com/espnradio/ ... ?play=live.

When I try it in IE7, it works just fine. I don't want to use IE7 of course, or I wouldn't be using firefox.

If there is a plugin out there that fixes this, or copying of some files, please let me know. Several of the KB links I followed don't even cover firefox version 2.0.0.1!
I'm almost at the end of my rope with this, as I've been working this problem since October, 2006. With only one gigabyte of ram on my notebook, it's unacceptable to run IE7 to listen to these stations because firefox cannot do it.

I certainly appreciate any help I can get on this issue. Remember, I can't install earlier versions of WMP, prior to version 11.

Thanks!

See http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=517324

The reason it doesn't work is Microsoft chose not to include the dynamic link library plugins for other web browsers besides IE. (what a surprise)

Thanks for the info, and following links in the thread recommend installing an update for a version of windows I am not running. Attempt at your risk it says, which is a bit unnerving.

12. Windows XP Media Centre Edition
Windows XP Media Centre Edition does not come with the Windows Media Player plug-ins. In addition, often it appears incapable of supporting them so just restoring the dll files may not work, and the installer for the plug-ins does not recognise XP Media Centre Edition. It has been reported that the update for Windows XP N (XP with no media playback ability, see issue 7) that re-adds the missing media playback files will allow XP Media Centre Edition to support the WMP plug-ins.
Warning:this update cannot be uninstalled. The only way to undo it is to re-install Windows, so attempt at your own risk. The update is here.

Is this the only way I can solve my issue?? I love firefox, but I'm not sure that hosing my windows installation is worth it. =\

EDIT: I decided to try another google search, out of one desperate try for help, and ended up at a microsoft technet forum, the link is
http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/Sho ... &SiteID=17
and the folks there had the same problem. A simpler fix opposed to the one I was about to try worked. I'm working that fix now.

OK!!!! YEAH! It works!

I can't believe that fix was that simple. It was downloading and copying those three files into Windows Media Player folder in program files. I'm so happy!

If some of the files are still missing, you can download the individual files from dlldump.com:

* npdsplay.dll: http://www.dlldump.com/download-dll-fil ... nload.html (this is the updated version)
* npwmsdrm.dll: http://www.dlldump.com/download-dll-fil ... nload.html
* npdrmv2.dll: http://www.dlldump.com/download-dll-fil ... nload.html

Download them to the Windows Media Player directory (usually C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player) and then restart Firefox.

Thanks again FatJohn for pushing me into the right direction. You ROCK! You have no idea how happy you have made me!
