Hi,
I've been using Thunderbird 1.0.6 for a couple of years, having had problems making the later releases install routine. So, have kept going back to 1.0.6. I downloaded 1.5.0.9 yesterday to try again and once again the install failed, giving error msg: "ERROR OCCURRED DURING INSTALLATION MOZILLA THUNDERBIRD: 5" The downside on this occasion is that I cannot re-install 1.0.6. Currently using Outlook Express but have no access to my email folders or address book. I'm using XP Pro on an AMD Duron 900Mhz (dedicated Email machine). Stacks of RAM and disk space. Can anyone advise please? Ian

Uninstall whatever you have, delete the Mozilla Thunderbird folder in Program Files (this is not where your messages are stored), clear your Internet cache, clear your Windows temp folder and download a fresh copy.

Thanks Daifne. I've just tried that but no-go, same error message. I also tried removing the registry entries for Thunderbird after the un-install but no change.

Usually that is caused by a corrupted download which is why you clear your Internet cache and temp folder. You did delete the original download, right?

Hi Daifne,
Yes I did. I've now also used JV16 to delete all traces of Thunderbird from my PC. I've downloaded the file again. I've cleared all caches very thoroughly but the problem persists. Currently using the ancient enemy (O. Express!)

Where are you downloading Thunderbird from?

Hi Daifne, thanks for giving a lot of time to thinking about this problem.
And yes, I make sure to clear the entire system tray to close all background progs. I also use Task Manager to clear the processes belonging to the AVG virus scanner and ZoneLabs firewall.

Interesting addition to my last post. I just downloaded Seamonkey and tried to install it. It failed in exactly the same way, at the 'Installing Navigator' point.
Just as a test, I installed Open Office followed by a game - no problems. Is there some installation process unique to Mozilla apps which is causing this problem?

Not that I know of. This is very weird. With Zone Alarm, how are you turning it off? Just disabling it from the systray simply disables the user interface. The program is still running.

No, I use TaskManager to close all processes such as AVG and Zonealarm. Also did all this in Safe Mode as well.

I'm stumped. I'm sorry.

No probs Daifne, thanks for the help. I'll continue to plug away at this and if I do come up with a fix, I'll post it on the board.

That would be great. Thanks. And, of course, you're welcome
