Hi and thanks for reading.

I'm on a new laptop using Vista and using Firefox. As it's new Java hasn't been previously installed for Firefox and I'm trying to install it but getting installation errors each time I try.

Image

Image

I've even tried copying the location of the plug in http://java.sun.com/update/1.6.0/jre-6u ... 586-jc.xpi and downloading the file to my computer and doing it the manual way but still get same error.

What else can I do? Browser problem or Java issues their end?

Thought I'd post here before emailing Java in case it's something my end.

Thanks,
Lisa

Thanks for the link. I don't understand the coding or what to do with it in that link. I see it's also a bug. I have tried doing the manual install before. Although on a page with a java speed test it won't work in Firefox and does so in IE, so I don't think it's installing to Firefox ok.

It's working fine on a different laptop my husband has. My husband can see that page no problem. Any step by steps appreciated :)

Thank you,
Lisa

I've also been to the Java test page and it's not working. Mozilla help page says something about a broken puzzle piece, but I don't get that, mine is completely blank. Just a space where the applet should be working.

It's working fine in IE and Firefox IE tab.

What shall I do?

Thanks for reading.

If you just want to update to the latest version (Update 1) you can try doing that through Windows Control Panel -> Java. I don't have JRE 6 but in JRE 5, the Java Control Panel has an "Update" tab with an "Update Now" button. If that doesn't work then you can download the full, offline installer, available from PluginDoc, here:
http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/windows.html#Java

However, your about:plugins list shows that Java 6.0 is already installed and detected in Firefox, so it should work. What test page are you using, where you say the applet box is completely blank? The Java KB article http://kb.mozillazine.org/Java has other test pages:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Java#Testing_Java
Are you sure Java is enabled and that you don't have any Firefox extensions like NoScript or AdBlock that may be blocking Java?

You have two issues, though. Java not working in Firefox and the xpi installation failure with error -203. Try creating a new test profile to see if Java works in the new profile AND if XPI installs start working (your original profile will not be touched and you can return to it later). Details here:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Creating_a_ne ... on_Windows
If a new profile doesn't work, see:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox

Thanks Alice for the suggestions. I'm working my way through them. First of all the first 2 paragraphs suggested I've run into problems on the 1st one :(

Tried the update button in control panel and it tries to install but then brings me an error during installation of "Error applying transforms. Verify that the specified transform paths are valid." *shrug* So doesn't update the Java.

The 2nd paragraph about the test page. I'm using the Java test page. http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml

It's just a blank space. See screen shots below...

Firefox:

IE Tab (in Firefox):

I don't have extensions on Firefox that would block Java.

Will try other solutions and report back after..

Lisa.

I see from your second screenshot that you are using the IE Tab extension to open the test page in a Firefox tab using Internet Explorer, and that it works there, but not in the first screenshot. You could also disable each of your extensions from Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions, then restart Firefox and try the test page again in Firefox, just in case running a previous Java applet in an IE tab is interfering.

A new profile will also test for extension issues (since it will not contain ANY added extensions or any of the associated preference settings) which is why I suggested it as a first step, since sometimes disabling an extension isn't enough.

You can also try the Java XPI install from the new profile, if you still want to update Java, but the same version of Java should work in both Internet Explorer and Firefox, since it will include both the ActiveX control for IE and the plugin for other browsers. You don't need to install Java separately for Firefox, like you do with Flash.

I did everything you said in your post and it still didn't work :(

What I've done is removed all traces of Firefox from my computer. All folders including the hidden ones and remnants from the registry. Clean installed Firefox again. Tried Java page, still blank.

I just don't get it either. Yes I know Java is supposed to work for both, it doesn't like me LOL!

Tried to install the .XPI file again on new Firefox without any extensions etc and still getting the 203 error as shown in post #1.

Driving me insane now!!

Sorry that you are having such a difficult time!

Since you're also getting an error even when trying to update Java from the Windows Control Panel Java Update tab, I did a
google search on Java "Error applying transforms. Verify that the specified transform paths are valid." and found this, among other results
http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bu ... id=6542954
http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?t ... 8&tstart=0
and from this forum:
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic ... 2c706b8ffd

So, to update Java and assuming that will fix your Firefox problem, download the latest JRE 6.0 Update 1 using the full off-line installer, which I mentioned before, is available here:
http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/windows.html#Java

Then see if it will install. If it doesn't, go to the equivalent of:
C:\Documents and Settings\"username"\Local Settings\Application Data\Sun\Java folder (Windows XP)
... which on Vista, I figure would be:
C:\Users\"username"\AppData\Local Data\Sun\Java
EDIT:
C:\Users\"username"\AppData\Local\Sun\Java
(ref)

Inside the Java folder, look for a folder named jre1.6.0_01 containing the MSI file and run the msi file to complete the installation.

If you feel uncomfortable doing this, I can relate. Maybe a Windows Vista or Sun Java forum would be the better choice for you.

Thank you Alice. I've updated my Java to the latest version fine using the way in which you state.

Although the Firefox problem still exists *shrug* :(

I seem to have found a solution but it's temporary. I installed Firefox 2.0 and Java is working. The MSI file from Java has disappeared so cannot update to the latest version. Java test page is now working, although now caused some other error (links won't open at all in MSN Messenger now, have to copy and paste).

If I update to Firefox 2.0.0.3 then the Java issues are straight back to square 1. Must be a bug with the latest version I assume?

I was having trouble getting Java to work too, although I wasn't getting the same error messages you did. While I was Installing Java, I got a message that version (JRE6 update 1)was incompatible with Firefox 2.0.0.3 I think it has something to do with the Program Compatibility Assistant in Vista. While Java was installing, if you looked at Firefox--tools--add-ons--Extensions, Java was listed with a red x, details showed the incompatibility statement. But after the Java was finished installing, it was no longer listed in the extensions. I'm guessing that vista did something. Anyway I finally got it to work by installing JRE 5 update 8 and then installing JRE6 update 1. It works now, but I'm not sure which Java is actually working. Anyway, good luck.

genekimf,
On that "incompatibility" message when installing JRE 6 with Firefox 2.0.0.3, it supposedly refers only to the Java console, which is a "hidden" extension that JRE 6 installed. See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Java#Java_con ... _-_Firefox

Lisa,
I don't understand why would you want to run that MSI file again? The about:plugins list will show what Java version Firefox is detecting... it should be JRE 6.0 Update 1 for all Java plugins listed.

As you were able to update Java to JRE 6.0 Update 1 by running the MSI file in the
C:\Users\"username"\AppData\Local <del>Data</del>\Sun\Java\jre1.6.0_01 folder then I suspect that the MSI file later disappeared because it was a "temporary" file that is designed to be cleaned up after the installation completes. If you update to a newer version of Java in the future, you might have to use the same workaround; for example, download the JRE 6.0 Update 2 offline installer, then run the MSI file in the C:\Users\"username"\AppData\Local <del>Data</del>\Sun\Java\jre1.6.0_02 folder if the install fails with the same error message.

If Java 6 simply will not work at all with Firefox 2.0.0.3 on Vista, you could stick with an older Firefox 2 version; however, it is not a great solution since Firefox 2.0.0.3 is much more secure and has many bug fixes. Possibly the issue will be resolved with the next Java update. I hate to suggest that you downlevel to JRE 5 which is currently at version 1.5.0_11 (you will need to uninstall JRE 6 for JRE 5 to work)) since JRE 6 is the preferred version for Vista, I've gathered.

Sorry I can't come up with any other ideas for you.
