Also, if I right click on file from Windows Explorer and use the Send to Mail Recepient, the image is not sent.

Messages with JPG images from friends using Outlook and Outlook Express are no longer displayed inline, but are shown as attachments.

I tried all three of these, and the images appear inline OK for me, using Thunderbird 1.5.0.10.

I uninstalled McAfee Total protection 2007 today in replaced it with Kaspersky AntiVirus and then tried these
same tests again and they worked OK, so it must have something to do with McAfee.

Thunderbird inline images there should be an option!

Post by brotherman38 »

There should be an option to view images inline or not. This sucks! I may have to start using another mail client.

There is. View>Display attachments inline. It's a toggle. But, this only applies to attached images. Embedded images are not the same.

Inline Pictures Display still broken in TBird 2

Post by David.P »

ravenbird wrote:You should also know that I get the same problem with pictures and backgrouns sent from Incredimail, outlook, outlook express, eudora and others to me.

So, it seems that every (or real close to it) email program handles inline pictures and puts them directly into the email and TB doesn't.

For me, this is a real problem as people send me pics to insert into their web pages. People send me pics for othe reasons also and backgrounds from other people are displayed as a link thereby losing the total effect of the email.

I've read through pages and pages of this forum and tried all kinds of stuff and combinations. None of them worked. I've been at this over 8 hours trying to get this to work. The sun has come up. So, at this point, has anyone discovered a way to make the inline pics show up in the email? Or made a script or something?

I think it's a poor excuse that TB is saying that it's "pure" and all others aren't and that's why TB can't handle inline pics. This needs repair and if I knew where to complain, I would. So, help with that issue is needed also if you happen to know. I'm new to TB (about 10 hours). At this point, I'm really thinking of going back to Outlook.

Thanks for your anticipated help,
Raven

I'd like to support every single word in ravenbird's above post which is already one year old and still completely unresolved.

I have literally thousands of mails people have sent me or I have sent to people using Outlook Express, where inline pictures (PNG, GIF and JPG) have been attached or embedded using the attribute "Content-Type: application/octet-stream" -- and where all these pictures do not show up in the preview pane nor in the message window. Thunderbird seems to be the only mail client on the entire planet to have this annoying "feature". This is a complete pain, and the only reason for me not to switch to TBird.

PLEASE, someone who knows how to do it fix this bug, or find a workaround,

Thanks already heaps in advance,

Workaraound

Here's what I did to work around this annoying behaviour of Thunderbird:

- get the free tool "A.F.9 Replace some bytes", run it
- "Find what": application/octet-stream
- "Replace with": image/jpeg
- run this on all mail folders (the files in the mail directory that have no extension (make a backup before doing the find/replace!)

<img src="http://666kb.com/i/apam16o9trqpqf3pr.png">

Finished!

Works like a charm (even makes *.gif and *.png-files display as well!) and has almost no side effect. Only thing that I realized was that some *.exe files someone had sent me now are reported as attached image files in the respective e-mails.

However, of course they are not "displayed" as images, and you can still save them with no problems from the e-mail.

Enjoy,
David.P

PS: Here's my screenshot ;)
The e-mail displayed was sent using Outlook Express.

TB really is about to become a gorgeous e-mail client. Outlook farewell!

Btw, "WMT"-Extension, anyone (<b><i><u>W</u></i>ord as <i><u>M</u></i>ail-Editor in <i><u>T</u></i>hunderbird</b>)?

This extension really would make TB the final Outlook KILLER.
Did I say Killer? I mean, "Thurminator"!

And since Word already reads and displays Thunderbird's "Drafts" file like a charm, creating such an extension might not even be that difficult...

$33 Reward from me for creating a working WMT-Extension! Who joins in?

I can't believe it. There is already such an extension:

External Editor!

And since today it has even begun to work with Word ;)

Let's hope that there will be even more progress on this, as soon as possible, especially regarding External Editor (say, Word) as standard editor in thunderbird as well as html graphics support.

I concur with the above poster. If the Thunderbird developers will not provide a fix for this, can someone create an Add-on that will? PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!!!

Thanks,

Pictures stripped when sent to others

Post by bh021552 »

Maybe it's time to get a more reliable program. Cut/past pics sometimes works, sometimes does not. Using the Insert... Image, sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. This is very bush-league.

Still a problem sending embedded images

Post by watermain »

I also have this problem with sending embedded images.

I usually use Suse Linux and have this problem. I recently had to use my Windows XP machine for email, and this problem does not exist on the WinXP version.

In Windows I can copy and paste an image into a new email. In Linux that option is grayed out. The insert image did work once for me, recently. It won't do it again, tho.

I really love using Linux and Thunderbird, but I must be able to send graphical emails. Since this problem seems to have existed for quite some time, and no answer on how to fix it has surfaced, I have no option but to use a different email client.

Does anybody know of a good Linux replacement for Thunderbird?

I have found a way around this problem, sort of.

I have a USB drive with Thunderbird Portable installed on it. I can run ThunderbirdPortable.exe on Linux using WINE. If I then send an email with an embedded graphic in it, it works.

This may be the way that I will use Thunderbird from now on.
