Problems after Updating Firefox

Post by steviex »

If you have just updated Firefox, here are a few things that should make your transition easier.

I have divided this Topic into 2 sections

1. General Update Problems
2. Update from Firefox 1.5 or 2 to Firefox 3

1. General Update Problems

Hmm... I get a Q with a question mark in it, when I try to play a Flash movie on a Mac
The Quicktime plugin has decided that it wants to play flash movies, instead of the regular Flash player.
Read this article for instructions to put Quicktime in its place.. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Flash#Quickti ... over_Flash

Oh No... I get this Error.... Software Update AUS Connection timed out
Read this thread viewtopic.php?t=567795

Help! I can't Connect to the Internet
You will need to allow the new version of Firefox to be given access by your Firewall
See this thread viewtopic.php?p=2295421#2295421
and this article http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firewalls

Java says it is incompatible

Don't Panic... Your Java is still Working
The error is caused by a problem with the Java console application. If you do not plan on using it, this problem can be safely ignored.
Further information is here http://kb.mozillazine.org/Java#Java_con ... _-_Firefox

Yikes... I now have 2 editions of Firefox in my Add/Remove Programs Dialogue
This is caused by a bug in the Installer. It fails to delete the entry for the old version before inserting a new entry. This leaves two entries pointing to the same program,
There are two methods to deal with this
  1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310750 (for the brave)
  2. Uninstalling Firefox, then reinstalling the program (for the not so brave)

Arrrgh You have stolen my Bookmarks
Read this http://kb.mozillazine.org/Lost_bookmarks
If you have just updated to Firefox 3, see this http://kb.mozillazine.org/Lost_bookmark ... _3_upgrade

Umm OK ... I can't find my Profile Folder
Read this for how to find it. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folde ... ile_folder
In Windows ... this Folder may be hidden .....
To show hidden folders, open Windows Explorer and choose Organize → Folder and Search Options → Folder Options → View (tab) → Show hidden files and folders.
Also this Extension may help to locate it quickly https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/545

Crikey... My extensions have gone or are unusable....
The update has confused the extension manager.... This procedure will reset it, so Firefox rescans your collection of addons, to see what is really there.

Look in your Profile Folder (see above for how to find it) and Move these three files to another folder outside the profile (your Desktop will do)
extensions.ini
extensions.cache
extensions.rdf

Make sure Firefox is not running when deleting these files. Firefox will create new copies of these files on restart. When you are satisfied Firefox is running OK, you can delete the files you moved.

Oh No Firefox is Crashing/Hanging!
Read the following
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_crashes
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_hangs

Standard Troubleshooter http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox

Oh my, Windows won't let me select Firefox as my Default Browser
Sometimes on update, the "Mozilla Firefox" entry disappears from the Windows "Set Program Access and Defaults" listing. The "Mozilla Firefox" entry can be retrieved by downloading the full Firefox installer, then installing it "over the top". More information here http://kb.mozillazine.org/Default_brows ... r_manually

My Passwords are gone!
Read this viewtopic.php?t=525291
viewtopic.php?p=2765199#2765199

My Toolbar has gone back to default
Read this http://kb.mozillazine.org/Toolbar_custo ... on_startup

I can't use or download Addons
Read this http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_ins ... _-_Firefox

I'm a Limited user, and my update Failed!
  1. Log into Windows as an Administrator.
  2. Set the Limited User permissions on the Mozilla Firefox directory in Program Files.
  3. Run Mozilla Firefox as the Limited User and allow it to apply the update.

I use a Mac and want to open the context menu with click and hold
To change the behaviour of this function, do the following
Type about:config into the location bar and then find the entry for ui.click_hold_context_menus
and right click on the entry, and select Toggle. (This only works in Macs)
More details here http://kb.mozillazine.org/Ui.click_hold_context_menus

2. Update from Firefox 1.5 and 2 to Firefox 3

If you are updating from Firefox 1.5 or earlier to Firefox 3, I recommend you Uninstall Firefox 1.5 before Installing Firefox 3

I don't like the new way the Location Bar behaves...
Read this thread HERE.... viewtopic.php?f=38&t=685365

My Bookmarks have Vanished !
Read this for help to retrieve them http://kb.mozillazine.org/Lost_bookmark ... _3_upgrade

I want Firefox 3 to look like an Earlier version...

Firefox 2 look....
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/7712
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6898
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6554

Firefox 1.5 look..
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/9172
http://webdesigns.ms11.net/winstripethemes.html

And if you want a Firefox 0.9 look:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6883

Help! My toolbars look too big or my Display is messed up, with items missing
The Theme you are using is not Compatible with Firefox 3. Change to another Theme that is Compatible with 3.0
(The theme may have been accepted at the upgrade, but may still not be suitable)

Help.. My Back/Forward Buttons are Missing!
Firefox 3 uses a different Icon from Firefox 2, so your localstore.rdf may not have updated correctly.
Read this to fix it... http://kb.mozillazine.org/Corrupt_localstore.rdf

I want my Back and Forward Menus separate again
Install this Extension NoUn Buttons https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/7056
NOTE... This probably will not work on custom Themes unless the Theme Author has allowed for it...

How to get my close button back to the end of the tab bar
Type about:config into the location bar and then find the entry for browser.tabs.closeButtons and right click on the entry, and select Modify and enter the value 3 into the dialogue box.

I don't like the tabs scrolling
In about:config , change browser.tabs.tabMinWidth to 0

I notice the tabs scroll smoothly... I want them to snap into place
Type about:config into the location bar and then find the entry for toolkit.scrollbox.smoothScroll and right click on the entry, and select Toggle to make the entry false

How to get my email icon back
Try installing this extension here http://webdesigns.ms11.net/getmail.html
If this fails to work, try the Plus version.

How do I get the throbber/activity indicator to go to my homepage when I click on it?
Install this extension Throbber Button https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2821

If you have the Active X Plug in installed, Remove it. It will not work in Firefox 3 and will cause many problems
Uninstalling the ActiveX plugin on Windows
* Close all instances of your browser.
* Go to the installation directory.
* Go into the plugins folder and delete the file npmozax.dll.
* Go back to the installation folder, and then go into the components folder, and delete the files nsIMozAxPlugin.xpt and nsAxSecurityPolicy.js.
* Go back to the installation folder, and then go into the \defaults\pref folder and delete the file activex.js.

Thanks to np, the EdMeister, Hawkeey, trolly, Alice and VanillaMozilla for much of this information

There's no reason to go fully over to the Dark Side. You can install the IEVIew or IETab extension:

IETab = https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419

IEView = https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/35

Just in case some one has problems during updates:
