Google Toolbar removal

Post by dataodo »

Generally, I trust Firefox, and their judgment...

Generally, I keep my computer clean of spyware, and programs that lead to same.

With the 2.0.0.5 update, for the first time, I find I can NOT uninstall the Google tool bar.

With its open (always) port, and other things I have noted in the past (guided answers to needless trash of supporting web sponsors, and not the answer I am looking for, unless somewhere on page 2000 of the search list) I quit using google years ago. The same is true for Ask nee Ask Jeeves (absolute worst offender in the past).

Up to this install, removing was no problem, with a little leg work.

Why not now??

I know money has to come from somewhere, but this is a Microsoft/spyware tactic, not open source.

Firefox, as downloaded from Mozilla, has no Google toolbar with it.

Did you download some bundled version from a non-Mozilla site? If so, you really shouldn't you know. Those sites get $1.00 from Google every time someone downloads Firefox that has that toolbar bundled with it.

Google Toolbar removal

Post by dataodo »

1) I downloaded from the Mozilla.org, directed site.

2) It now ONLY lists the 'Google Toolbar' version.

3) I have tried (multilple times) removing the regular way, deleting the .dll's, editing the about:config, and a few other means I know geeks might....

Needless to say, the turkey is still there. (for sake of information, I do use a specific search engine. even it is getting crapped out with adverts yada, yada, yada...

but, I still trust it to NOT keep a port open, that the black hats are all aware of, and not to put what I am looking for, so far down the probable page. Too bad it needed to sell out to the competition... sigh)

Can you please show me the reference to the Google Toolbar here? http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

Did you try the manual removal method, in the article I posted...

OK... Try this.....
  1. Back up your Profile http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_backup
  2. Create a new Profile. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Creating_a_ne ... on_Windows
  3. Check that this profile is running normally with no sign of the Google Toolbar,
  4. Migrate your settings back into that profile. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_ ... _-_Firefox
If the Google toolbar is still there with a new profile, then download and install a new copy of Firefox from here http://www.mozilla.com/ before restoring your profile.
If it is still there, then you will have to dig it out of Windows....

Google Toolbar removal - success...

Post by dataodo »

1) Correctly posted above... YOU HAVE to delete the folder (otherwise... google is back).

2) Correctly posted, the link given gets you a clean install, without the toolbar. Why then, do all the links I reached the download page from both external and internal sites, get me only the toolbar? only the link given got me what I wanted. I truly appreciate the link, and the helpful instructions.

3) Unfortunately, I feel a 'clean install' link should be upfront, on the regularly reached pages, not obtainable in the forums. (Keep in mind, I thank all for the help. I am not a newbie. I reached the download pages I got to, (until the last one) from Major Geeks, Mozilla.org, Firefox net searches, and three sites listed on daily rotation...

Again, thank you all for the help.

I have a clean browser again... Now to retweak... (sigh)

I had a similar problem and solved it by removing the toolbar from view (right-click on the home button and deselect Google Toolbar) before uninstalling it.
