I am trying to use a Message Filter that will automatically forward mail from specific senders to an external address. I get the error message:

Sending of message failed.

This is a horrible message: WHY did the sending [sic] fail ? I can forward manually; I forward in-line,; some of the messages have attachments and some do not.

I've read http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic ... 363&sid=42 and http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=57472, but they seems to be about other (albeit related) topics.

I am using version 2.0.0.6 (20070728)

Thank you for your help.

Is there more to the error message window?

I have seen similar issues with forwarding filters before. Recheck everything in the filter, even though I believe you probably have. You likely have some very minor error somewhere in the address to which you are forwarding.

No, the message is nothing more (that's why it's horrible).

I have tried different email addresses in the forward (e.g. copied from the Contacts; just the base email address without any name, etc.).

Can I run in debug mode or check a log somewhere to get more error information?

Thanks
Cheers

Have you tried typing in the e-mail address? Sometimes the copy includes a trailing space.

I have the same problem with forwarding filter. Everything works perfect except the sending part of filter. If I set action to tag emails as important, filter works correctly. But if I want to forward to any email address (e.g. copied or typed), I receive only general error message mentioned above.

In my case I am trying to forward incoming messages with attachments (not sure if that matters). It seems that for some reason it is trying to forward the orginal message as a .eml attachment. I am getting an error back form the server because it does not accept emails with .eml attachments. I did change the mail.forward_message_mode default in about:config to 2 (inline). But it still does not forward properly.

I am now thinking about switching to the new "Windows Live Mail" app believe it or not!

I am having the exact same problem. It forwards with .eml attachments instead of inline like it does when I manually forward. My server won't pass on the message because of potential virus abuse. So now I'm manually forwarding messages, dozens a day in some cases. This just started with the newest update of thunderbird. It was working flawlessly before that update a few weeks ago.

I have the same problem. The forwarding filter worked fine with TB 1.5, but since I upgraded to 2.0.0.6 it doesn't.

The filter log however notes no error. The entries there look like the forward is successful ('forwarded'), which
in fact it isn't. Deleting the filter and creating a new filter with the same rules did not help either.

I hate to sound like a repeater, but I am experiencing the same issue. Set up a filter to forward a message, ran the filter, and got a message that the attempt to forward had failed.

I hope someone can work out a solution.

This evening, the FWDing-filter suddenly worked. For six mails. But then it switched back to the error messages. I have no idea what made it work or what made it not work again.

Same thing here, I've tried everything mentioned. The global inbox elimination solution is of no use to IMAP users.

This is really a show-stopper. I will have to go back to some other MUA until this is fixed.

I posted the solution in this article: <a href="http://blog.taragana.com/index.php/archive/solving-failure-to-forward-emails-in-mozilla-thunderbird-by-message-filters-understanding-thunderbird-account-architecture/">Solving Failure To Forward Emails in Mozilla Thunderbird by Message Filters</a>.

Hope it helps...

BTW: At one point, before I found the solution, I was considering switching to Evolution as this problem is a big issue for me.
