Some software got installed on my PC, it also Installed a Tool Bar For "Dealio" I was able to get rid of the toolbar, but when I open a new tab the page defaults to this address

"chrome://searchsettingsplugin/skin/tabwelcome.html"

Its really driving me crazy, uninstalled firefox multiple times, still showing up, has anyone heard of this and can you tell me how to rid my browser of it?

PLEASE!!!

Thanks

If you open a new tab and click on the 'search settings' link at the bottom of the page it tells you how to get rid of it. For XP goto Control Panel, Add/Remove programs, find Search Settings and click the Remove button. I hope this works for you as it didn't for me. I got Error 1402 Could not open key: UNKNOWN\SearchSettings.BH0.1\CLSD Verify you have sufficient access to that key or contact your support personnel. It doesn't tell you who made this software so I can't get any more help. I hate these people who inflict their software on us when we don't ask for it!

I have just solved it. In Firefox go to Tools, Add-ons, locate Search Settings and click Remove. When you restart Firefox all is well!

I've done all of the above and Search Settings keeps trying to initialize. Any more suggestions?

I first uninstalled the program dealio. Firefox then worked normally until I rebooted. Then I seemed only to get to dealio selected pages.

Tried all the usual virus and malware scans to no avail. Then did a search in Documents and settings/.../applications/ Mozilla, and found dealio had a lot of entries in my profile. I closed firefox and backed up the profile then edited the profile using Open Office Writer. I removed all references to dealio and rebooted the computer [yesterday]
So far the problem has gone away,
but how can I prevent unauthorised writing to my profile?

I have discovered that searchsettings is a script or program installed by an organisation called vendio. It seems it is in some way associated with the free yahoo toolbar [which I did not request, as I like google]. ecommerce guide states "In August, Vendio launched its own comparison shopping toolbar which focuses more on consumer products."
see also forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=866646

My copy was installed on Dec6, when I was looking for Christmas gifts , probably by one of the shopping comparison sites. Getting rid of dealio solved the problem of hijacking the browser but my firewall kept reporting that searchsettings was trying to access the internet [I blocked the access].
I tried to delete the searchsettings file manually but was unable to remove everything. When I then tried to use windows uninstal it was unable to work because of the partial file removal. Having therefore restored all the deleted files, the uninstal seems to have worked.

I was able to uninstall dealio by following these directions. I think removing search settings was the key.
