sound just stopped working in Firefox 2

Post by Guest »

Hi, I saw another user post a similar question about why firefox would suddenly stop playing sound. I have a similar problem and I can pinpoint it to around the time I installed the new Firefox 3 beta. The beta worked fine and I was able to listen to hear sound from any website as normal, so I forgot about the problem on FF2 and just used the beta. However, I wanted to go back to my FF 2 since certain sites didn't work with FF3, plus I missed my add ons, so I uninstalled FF3, uninstalled FF2, reinstalled FF2 and none of it helped. Just like the previous poster with this issue, I have no new add ons or have not installed any firewall recently.

I did notice one other thing...the buttons in the options menu are greyed out. Although I can access the menus under the different buttons, I can't help but think it's somehow related to the problem with sound? HELP!! (I didn't notice a resolution to the other poster's problem so figured I would post separately, hope that's not a problem.)

still no sound....and no help?? Does ANYONE out there have a solution? I'm beginning to think I'm better off abandoning FF. Maybe I'll look at it again with FF3....

If you use the same profile in Firefox 2 that you have used with Firefox 3 then you need to create a new profile as the two are not compatible.
See: Standard diagnostic: Create a new (test) profile
(only enter a name for the new profile, do not click "Choose Folder" to specify a location)

sound on Firefox

Post by Guest »

thanks for responding dickvl! I figured I must have broken something when I installed the beta, but didn't know how to fix it. I uninstalled both versions as you saw in my original post and then re-installed ONLY FF2, and yet I still have no sound. Is your suggestion only for running both versions simultaneously? I just want to run FF2 for now...with sound. I appreciate your help and any clarification of your suggestion that you can offer. Warren

You didn't answer if you created a new profile: uninstalling Firefox doesn't affect your profile and unless you removed your old profile or created a new profile then that old profile in still used and will effect the new installation.

If your problem is with Flash then try to uninstall and reinstall Flash:

ok....uninstalled and reinstalled flash and still doesn't help. My problem is with sound in general in Firefox though...streaming audio, video, flash video no type of sound at all works. Sound in Opera works, sound in IE works, sound in general works in every other application. I'm open to any other suggestions you have.

I fixed it on my computer...

Had the exact same problem.
I removed the bugmenot addon and now it works.
It could be an addon conflicting with flash...

same issue

Post by antorres88 »

Hi everybody,

i have the same issue, no sound on firefox (youtube, metacafe) but it works perfectly on IE and other applications.
I looked through all forums and seems to me that this is a problem without solution,
tried uninstalling FF, erased all program files, windows registry keys, my FF profile.. ERASED EVERYTHING, reinstalled all plugins over and over, but nothing seems to work!

I really hope to find a solution, FF has been very comfortable for me. Don't want to use IE, but lately is the only choice if I want to see some videos or just listen something.

I am having the same problem. Haven't tried any of the beta's. Have just kept with the main firefox line. The sound stopping working didn't seem to coincide with an update or new addon.

(It is, I suppose, possible, however unlikely, that it happened with the latest update, and I just didn't do anything with audio on that browser for a few days, so I ended up noticing it days after updating -- but I very highly doubt it, and it doesn't make much sense anyway, as I havnt had any problems with my other firefox browsers on my other PC's which all got the latest update. )

Does anyone have other idea's? I don't know if I can live without sound in my firefox, on my main home PC. If I don't find an answer soon, I will probably quite literally re-install windows, because I refuse to use IE or Opera.

Someone please help!

OK -- Im thinking maybe it has something to do with Quicktime.

Strangly under about:plugins -- quicktime is listed like 8 times. Not sure what the deal with that is.

I looked in options and quicktime is listed as the program to play almost every kind of file (not sure how that happened, whenever I install quicktime, I always select the ONLY the quicktime only formats for it to open.

This is what my about:plugins looks like

PROBLEM SOLVED!! (At least for me)

Post by bdb4269 »

OK, so the quicktime thing had nothing to do with it.

I have 2 firefox profiles I use (well one I use, and one I hardly use, for anonymous browsing using Tor/the Vidalia Bundle) -- I noticed that sound also did not work in that profile, which has never been updated at all (and definitely not used for weeks before this happened.

Since sound worked in other browsers and other programs, I never checked the windows audio mixer -- but since I knew for sure it was not a corupt profile, I decided to look at the windows mixer.

Normally in XP, you have a master volume and a wave volume (that effects all audio programs that are not midi, or one of those other options.)

In windows Vista, you have a master volume and an applications volume.

BUT -- I had a master volume and an applications volume - AND a firefox Volume, and a Pidgin Volume, and two unlabeled Volumes.
http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/7595/volumegz6.jpg

The firefox and one of the unnamed where muted, so I unmuted them, and its all working great now.

Im glad I took that screen shot when I did, because, now when I go into the mixer I only have Master and Application Volumes. The individuals are missing. (Like I opened it back up right after unmuting and closing it and the individual volumes where gone)

This is what it looks like now
http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/518/volume2ft5.jpg

-----------------

I have NO idea how this happened in the first place. I don't even know if its normal at all for windows to display different applications like that. I cant seem to get it to do it again.

O well -- Im just glad it works now!!! :)

I hope this helps solve someone elses problem --- and/or if anyone has any light to shed on what the deal is with Vista Volume Mixer, Id love to hear it.
