Every day when I start up Minefield for the first time, there is some hard disk activity for quite a few seconds even after the browser window has appeared and the websites have loaded. During this time the browser is severely unresponsive (i.e. GIF animations are very choppy or stop completely, menus don't react to hovering/clicking etc.). But it only happens after the first startup every day.

What causes this? I've seen someone else complain about this a few days back, but there were no replies ...

egoego, thanks. I don't believe that it's the download manager. I only have 5 items there at the moment, but the freeze is longer than 5-6 seconds (I'll measure next time but I'm sure that it's over 10 sec, with an 5400 rpm hdd)

EDIT: The strangest thing is that this seems to happen only once per day, and not after every boot. I just rebooted, but I can't see the problem now. But I am sure that it'll appear again tomorrow.

Image
1. open some page
2. Ctrl+F (open Find Toolbar)
3. mouseover the "Next" button
4. sometimes, hover state looks strange

Does anyone reproduce it?

I confirm, this doesn't happen on every startup. No livemarks, phishing protection disabled.

The problem is that it's very difficult to track the cause down if it happens only once daily. How can these things be triggered manually?

For add-ons, set the pref "app.update.lastUpdateTime.addon-background-update-timer" to some low number, and that should make it check for updates real soon.

A question about URLs and ecoding: I use quicksearches a lot (with dictionaries). I used this quicksearch bookmark with Firefox 2, where it works correctly:

http://www.tritrans.net/cgibin/translat ... Norsk&Fra=%s&sourceid=Mozilla-search

But with Fx3 there are problems: try, for example, searching for "bær" using this bookmark. The letter æ will be displayed as two characters (which encode it as UTF8), so the word won't be found in the dictionary. Is this a bug? Is it filed?

Here's another example: Try searching for "bőr" with this bookmark:

http://dict.sztaki.hu/dict_search.php?L ... _form=1&W=%s&M=1&P=1&T=1

Again, it works in Fx2, fails in Fx3.

Now I don't really understand why this is/how this works. One strange thing to note is that in Fx2, these characters seem to be encoded into a single byte (%E6 for æ and %F5 for ő), even though æ is only present in the latin1 charset, but not latin2, and ő is only present in latin2, but not latin1. And still, both quicksearch bookmarks work correctly.

What magnitude do you mean when you say "a low number"? The current value is 1202843125

News from the Drag N' Drop front. The bug is blocked by another, and they are having trouble contacting the owner of the blocker.

If a server takes too long to respond, Firefox pops up and alert dialog to notify me of the fact and switches to the tab which was attempting the download. How can I disable this alert dialog so that it will just fail without displaying the dialog or switching tabs ?

Also, how to I change the timeout value ?

I'm asking because this seems to have changed recently (ie. it never used to display this dialog or switch tabs) ?

I've actually been wondering about this. The DND in the Library seems to be stalled on a bug that keeps menus from opening when they're dragged over, which is fallout from the thread manager or popup rewrite or something. I'm not sure why that affects things in the Library though, where neither of the dragover options is a menu. Maybe they're worried about someone dragging something from another source into the Library? Does anyone know what the hangup there is? I'm not mad. Just curious.

Divide by two probably. I'm assuming that that is either Date().now value or a PRTime value.
