Although i initially thought about this feature as an extension, I eventually wrote it as a bookmarklet. Hope you'll forgive me for posting on the extensions forum .
anyway, it highlights a section under the mouse with pale yellow (full width, 100 pixels high). suppose to help u better focus on the text, or as a teaching aid (might help dislectics as well?)
pls go here for a screenshot and the bookmarklet itself. (i couldn't post it here.. the board blocks it).
feedbacks are welcome. improvements even more
enjoy,

Easiest install I ever saw. And it works perfectly. Totally amazing. Would that other extensions worked this well.

one problem is that context menu doesn't recognize images or links while on highlight mode.
one idea: freeze/unfreeze the highlight with single clicks.

yes, that's a problem i currently have. the yellow stripe is a layer on top of all other layers, so when you click, or right-click it goes to that layer, and not getting to the actual page. as i said, improvements (code) are welcome.
cheers

Thanks for this bookmarklet. However, when an area is highlighted, you can't select the text in that area.

Jokertej :
You can drag it onto your bookmark toolbar. I am using all-in-one gestures and have no problems doing that.

I suppose you have configured gestures for left mouse button. In this case, hold down the button for about a second before moving. This cancels the gesture and lets you drag links or images.
