An explanation about versions and builds for testing...

Post by mscott »

I get a lot of questions from testers about finding the right builds to test in lieu of the fact that we have currently have two branches plus trunk builds right now.

Thunderbird 2.0.0.x
Based on Mozilla 1.8 branch. These are the security and maintenance releases for the Thunderbird 2 product line.

Vitals
English Builds
Other Languages
Current application version: 2.0.0.x
Software Update: Channel defaults to "nightly". Testers will get upgraded via software update to each nightly build by default.
Who: Folks who want to help test the stable product. You won't see new features, but can expect more stability and fewer regressions than the trunk. Testers on these builds are helping us test our security and maintenance releases.

Thunderbird 3
Based on the Mozilla trunk. Contains the latest mozilla platform and application feature changes.

Vitals:
English Builds
Other Languages
Current application version: 3.0a1
Software Update: Channel defaults to "nightly". Testers will get upgraded via software update to each nightly build by default.
Who: Folks who want to live on the bleeding edge, testing new features as soon as they land. You should really expect regressions and other issues from nightly to nightly with these trunk builds :).

Ideally, we'd like to foster a community of folks for each of these builds. Depending on how risk averse you are, you can find the right branch for you to download and use.

For more information, see the Thunderbird project roadmap.

The l10n link is false. It should be:

for all these builds and branches, wouln't it bring up more clarity to break down the builds/features/bugs etc. in the thunderbird part of the forum into TB1 / TB2 / TB3 ? Would be much easier to find the right tree.

If the forum is split into TB1/TB2/TB3 then the users will not see answers to questions that apply to all versions. Without citing examples, lots of bugs and features made their way from TB1 to TB2.

I suspect that Thoskk is talking about just the Builds forum. Support, General, Features and Bugs don't need to be split like that.

Ah, that makes more sense. Thanks, Daifne.

Not the explanation of branches, trunks and the corresponding links itself, but the stated "Current application versions".
They should read:
TB 1.5.0.x, current application version: 1.5.0.12 (current nightly: 1.5.0.13pre)
TB 2, current application version: 2.0.0.5 [rc1] (current nightly: 2.0.0.5pre)
TB 3, current application version: nyr (current nightly: 3.0a1pre)
