12/28 nightly
if I want to regress to the 12/28 nightly, which a lot claim to be the last stable one... how can I get that?

Its so old that its not on the Phoenix site. Some kind people on the forum have mirrored it (including daihard and aroben)

Note - this is the last version to support installing themes and extensions on windows, which is why its popular.
If you use Linux then you may be able to use a more recent build - but I don't know which to recommend.

I've been told that starting with 01/17 (or around there), they broke it worse and on Linux, too.

Oh no. I am using the 2003-01-08 Linux nightly, which I believe is about as stable as the 2002-12-28 build. The "themes and extensions" issue isn't present with the Linux version, but the 2003-01-09 build broke the ability to save images by right-clicking them.
I'll give the 2003-01-17 a shot.
[EDIT] I've tried the 2003-01-18 nightly on RH 7.3. Alan is definitely right, it's worse. I now can't install any themes. I can go to the themes page, but then as I click on any theme to install it, Phoenix just quits! I am going back to the 2003-01-08 build...

Thanks for the useful info! I've just downloaded it. Shall try it once I'm back from my haircut appointment.
[EDIT] I am back... I just started fiddling with 2003-01-16. So far so good. Nothing seems to be broken AFAICT, and the 'save images' bug is indeed fixed. Hooray!

If you are using Windows, you can find the "installer" version here:
