LiveClick 0.3.0.0 Alpha 3 (April 17)

Post by protejohnny »

LiveClick 0.3.0.0 Alpha 3 is available now, a few days later than I wanted. Nevertheless, most of LiveClick's features have returned for this version, but they still require testing in Firefox 3. If you see anything wrong, please tell me.

0.3.0.0 Changelog (new in Alpha 3 marked by ++):
+ Livemarks can be styled when new, fresh, read, and unread
+ Fresh style available for all Live Bookmarks
+ Styles can be mixed and matched
+ Feed item styling handled more efficiently
++ Option to open fresh items in tabs
++ Option to keep livemark menu open after middle-clicking items
++ Option to mark items as read after viewing livemark menu, visiting site, or exiting Firefox
++ Option to alert after autoloading
++ Added support for Growl on Macs (I think)
++ Feed button icon changes when current site is Live Bookmarked
+ Annotations used to denote feed reading states instead of browsing history
+ Framework in place to support Live Bookmarks in bookmarks sidebar and library

Known issues/regressions from version 0.2.6.1:
- Can only "Monitor Live Bookmark" via a livemark's context menu
- Import/export/default settings not available
- Favicons revert to default icon after reloading
- Livemark styles do not persist across sessions
- Return of the menu displacement if open after reloading bug
- "Open All in Tabs" does not recognize livemark locations
- Executing a command on multiple livemarks in library do nothing
- Cannot set a custom Site Location for a Live Bookmark (always reverts to feed's home page)
- FeedBurner feed/BBC's "Latest Headlines" items don't get read after first visit
- Icons/strings will undoubtedly change
- Localized in English only

Note: this build is for Firefox 3 Beta 5 and Pre RC1 only!

Some favicons are larger than they should be... Ex: Megatokyo's live bookmark's favicon is 32x32px...

Thanks for the tip, RealityRipple. Favicons will be fixed in the next alpha.

One more thing... the "Open All in Tabs" menu item in live bookmarks... think you could remove that?

Yes, I think I can add an option to hide "Open All in Tabs."

Also, I'm considering changing some default settings. You'll still be able to customize them, but here's how LiveClick will behave/look for first time users. Speak up now if you disagree with any of these.

1) The "LiveClick Options..." menu item will be moved from the Tools menu to a new "Live Bookmarks" submenu in the Bookmarks menu. Other items in the submenu will be "Check for new items now," "Mark all live bookmarks as read," and "Clear live bookmarks history."

2) The common LiveClick commands will be shown at the bottom of livemark menus instead of the top. This follows the default behavior of Firefox 3.

3) The "View Feed" menu item will not be shown in livemark menus by default. Does anyone actually use this?

I use View Feed occasionally when a feed fails to load... That's about the only time I can think of.

Quick question, is there a way to turn off favicons for livebookmark feeds and instead just have the default livebookmark folder icon from our current theme?

thanks!

You can't turn off favicons in the current alpha. That option will be re-added in the next version.

FeedBurner feed/BBC's "Latest Headlines" items don't get read after first visit

I find that I have to click 'Mark All Items as Unread' twice for the corresponding feed to "fade."

Are these problems related?

Actually, no, the Mark All Items as Read/Unread should be working as expected. FeedBurner/BBC feeds only cause trouble when you load one of their items (which I believe is a consequence of bug #428690).

Does this problem occur when you Mark All Items of any feed?

Oh, okay. I just looked at the various possible settings in the preferences. I think I can make this work if I know what's the difference between New, Fresh and Unread.

Thanks.

I try to explain the differences between "new," "fresh," and "unread" items here:
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic ... 33#3319933

I've actually decided that the next alpha will no longer include an option to distinguish the styles of "new" items from "fresh" ones. The option is not as useful as I originally thought and the styles are the same by default anyway.
