    A top-crasher has been fixed:

They've just landed a new preference to see if bug 421482, the sqlite fysnc() performance issue, can be improved by changing sqlite's synchronous= full/normal/off operating mode.
Default is now "normal", the new pref is PREF_TS_SYNCHRONOUS "toolkit.storage.synchronous". Comments 135/136 are in conflict, Mike asked that the default *not* be changed when creating the pref... soi it might be updated again to switch it back to "FULL".
It take integer values 2="FULL" (the old default); 1="NORMAL" (the new default); 0="OFF" (enormous improvement of "the problem", but MIGHT BE MUCH MORE DANGEROUS!

There's talk in the bug, in the long term, of making backups for the places.sqlite file, much like FF2 started making backups of "bookmarks.html" as workaround for dataloss "WTF happened to my bookmarks" incidents. It's noted, in the bug, that even the current "synchronous=full" operating mode can't really protect people using NFS-mounted profiles, or other filesystems where the Application gets told "it's written" before the data AND the metadata has been absolutely, positively written to oxide (disk) or the USB stick stops blinking....

In the case of USB, I don't think that <b>any</b> current desktop OS/filesystem locks for that long. I'm gonna get a Tinderbox, back up my profile, and start running with 'toolkit.storage.synchronous=0', see how I like it. I am on Linux/ext3, the most badly impacted of all Linux configurations. But WATCH THE TINDERBOX BEFORE DOWNLOADING, because Mac and Windows are currently up in flames. Patch for 433525 looks like the most likely suspect, be careful.

    @rickst29,

What is "NFS" in "NFS-mounted profiles"?

Is chob even updating the thread with these landed fixes?

I assume Peter must be away, because Chob always lends an assist when that's the case, or Peter is having ISP issues again...

Its only been 'today' for the first time in what 10days ? anything has landed at all.. so perhaps he just didn't check ? or will be in tomorrow's thread since the patch landed after the thread was opened.

I'd argue that the following should be a blocker, as a major feature is broken and it is going to confuse the heck out of a lot of people if this goes to release:
"Session restore fails to restore tabs on restart when Firefox is successfully exited with the 'X' button (e.g. not forced to close or crashed)"
    http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=427468

Can someone use my recent steps to reproduce and see if they can reproduce it? I'm also trying to determine if it is a regression, but don't know in which nightly that "Save and Quit" was implemented.

NFS == "Network File System", originally created by SUN in the 1980s, but now widely used in Unix/Linux networks of all kinds. (RFC #1094, http://rfc.net/rfc1094.html). I'm talking about a remote profile, where the Firefox profile isn't stored on a hard drive right in the users' box.
Smart people are guessing that there's a lot of "took a power hit, lost my bookmarks" scenarios which could lead to destruction of the the "places.sqlite" DB even on a local box, and no matter how often we flush the data, although comment 141 just challenged that NFS claim. (It does agree that power hits and network failures would be problematic, but asks for an actual instance of NFS-mounted profile bustage <u>without</u> crashing hardware involvement.) I can imagine that flushing the data way too often could even INCREASE exposure to hardware I/O problems.
BTW Tinderbox still shows bustage on Windows/Talos, but Mac and Linux are both now entirely green (and yellow). Win 5.2 on "Dep-Nightly" is also clean, but most other builds (including Vista) are broke. There hasn't been an update done to "fix it", so maybe it's either a problem within the Talos build/test setups, or it's a platform specific bug.

Thanks. As a Windoze user, I am familiar with NTFS (New Technology File System). Just wanted to be sure it wasn't a typo.

On the latest nightly build, whenever I type at the end of a string in any input box (URL bar, google search, etc...) the browser window loses focus. Anyone else having this problem?

Occurs on Linux 20080523 build with new profile.

Yes, I was getting this also with the earlier 2008052304 update, it works fine now with the later 2008052317 update.
