"Firefox has stopped working" (Firefox crashing)

Post by AOV »

:: I have Firefox 3.0 and Windows Vista. ::

Ever since I got Firefox 3.0 on the day it was released, it has kept crashing frequently. I looked at the Firefox crashes article from MozillaZine KB (none of it applies) and performed the Standard diagnostic.

I ran Firefox in Safe Mode, but it crashed even then. I made a new profile, but it isn't that problem, either. I did a very thorough clean install of Firefox 3.0, and even redownloaded the installer file, but it still crashed.

When Firefox crashes, I can't use the Mozilla Crash Reporter, either, because there's the Windows Vista window with "Firefox has stopped working". (It's never been anything but the Windows Vista application crash box.)

It's strange that it might crash so randomly. It might crash when I try to load a new webpage, but when I load the same webpage again, after the crash, it will work fine. It's very difficult to predict (i.e., if I want to try to MAKE it crash, it won't necessarily).

When I downgraded to Firefox 2, it was all fine again. (As it has been when I've been using Firefox 2 before the advent of 3.0.)

I have collected several of the "More Details" parts when Firefox crashed. They're not all the crashes, as I've stopped collecting information (but I can still get it from Windows' Event Viewer anyhow). I've noticed that the 'fault module' is most often xul.dll or mozcrt19.dll. There are others, but these are the most frequent.

(It seems like a problem with the DLLs or something.)

When you did a thorough clean of of Firefox 3.0, did you delete the entire application folder?
Delete any downloaded or partially downloaded installer files.
Clear the browser cache (of whatever browser you are using to download FF) and the Windows Temp directory.
Delete the directory C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
Delete the Profile Folder ( http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Folder )
Shutdown any anti-virus software you are running.
Download a new copy of the full installer from www.mozilla.com
Run the installer.
Restart the anti-virus program.
Run Firefox with no add-ons and only the default theme for a day or so to confirm the frequency of crashes (or the absence thereof).

Looks like you get to join some others having DEP failures:

I've yet to see one on my Vista box...

Yes, I did all of it. (Part of the thorough clean reinstall.) It still crashes.

Yes, this is another cause of some (i.e., very few) of the crashes. So far, though, it's only been the cause of two or three crashes, compared to the numerous crashes from an unknown cause. I saw the thread, but it doesn't have much of a solution. =S

Is it a plugin? I haven't individually disabled those to test (since crashing frequency is variable), and (most?) they're not stored in the Firefox installation folder or the Profile folder, are they?

I have:
- Adobe Acrobat
- iTunes Application Detector
- Java(TM) Platform SE 6U7
- Microsoft(R) Windows Media Player Firefox Plugin
- Mozilla Default Plug-in
- QuickTime Plug-in 7.5 (861)
- Shockwave Flash 9.0 r124
- Shockwave for Director (version 11.0)
- Silverlight Plug-In (1.0.3041.0)

Also, are the crash details with the Problem Event Name pf BEX an indicator of DEP?

I would either get the Silverlight beta 2 or remove Silverlight 1.0, its a known cause of crashes.
From what I've been reading yes, BEX is an indicator of DEP.

Hi Avo, it is Java 6 Update 7 what is causing the crashes.
You can verify Firefox 3 works all right always you don't open a page with an applet. And you can reproduce the crash just opening Java Console (Tools -> Java Console).
I had the same issue, then i uninstalled Java 6 Update 7, then Firefox plugin went back to Java 6 Update 6 and it works all right now.
I needed a restart to get it working.

I hope mozilla fixes soon this issue with Java 6u7.

I'm having the same issue, but I can't reproduce it just by opening the Java console.

Never mind... that gets rid of the problem for a little while, but it keeps coming back.

I've had this problem with Firefox 2 and 3, and with a browser based on Firefox (Flock).

I can even start the browser and sit on about:blank, but the crash will still occur after a short time.
Since I've been keeping track, this has been the error message:

I also have a similar error code for my FF crashing.

Faulting application name: firefox.exe, version: 1.9.2.3989, time stamp: 0x4cf9293f
Faulting module name: xul.dll, version: 1.9.2.3989, time stamp: 0x4cf9289d

Faulting module path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\xul.dll
Report Id: 58cfa03c-1eca-11e0-8afb-d284a12b1070

The only thing I've got new in this computer is some new RAM I've installed since boxing day. I did Memtestx86 on it, but it is starting to look like I didn't do enough passes for the errors to show up in the tests. I say this "might' be a ram problem because of the error code: Exception code: 0xc0000005, which is commonly related to corrupted ram issues.

Try testing your RAM to see if its faulty or not. (I use Memtestx86 as stated above)
