Updating Thunderbird 1.5.0.x to 2.0.0.x issues and problems

Post by Young Alex! »

If you have just updated Thunderbird, here are a few things that should make your transition easier. (this is pretty much the same as steviex's Problems after updating firefox thread so i thought we need a thread for thunderbird as well this may help if it doesn't sorry)

i hope that people will add to it considering im far from the one that will always have the answers :D

if you get the message software update failed then here are a few things you can do
before reading the thread first try stop Logitech webcam if you have it you don't really have to uninstall it all you have to do is disable it for long enough for the update process to finish if that doesn't work then
try seeing this thread
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic ... 6&start=0&

I want my old Default Theme back...
try this it is sort of close
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?p=2915165

My thunderbird is hanging on installation
try seeing this

Some common issues
If you get a "Error opening file for writing: r\n\r\nmozMapi32.dll\r\n\r\nClick Retry to try again, or\r\nCancel to stop the installation." error message it may be due to a Logitech webcam. Disable the webcam and try again. A drastic alternative would be to rename the mozMAPI.dll file in the Thunderbird program directory

setting up a filter...

Disappearing Mail
see these

http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=575466

I'm a Limited user, and my update Failed!(think this apply's for thunderbird but not certain)
1. Log into Windows as an Administrator(or get your Administrator to do it for you.
2. Set the Limited User permissions on the Mozilla Thunderbird directory in Program Files.
3. Run Mozilla Thunderbird as the Limited User and allow it to apply the update.

links aren't working
This may help
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=576539

can't find the profile folder
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Thunderbird
for pc's with the operating system
My Computer>Documents and Settings>User>Application Data>Thunderbird>Profiles>then it is usually or in my case never really checked with others :) a number code.default

if you are migrating to thunderbird and want to keep your mail or most of it then try seeing this
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Copying_or_mo ... s_messages

Rollback
If you want to go back to 1.5.0.12 uninstall 2.0, delete the contents of the Thunderbird program directory, and install 1.5.0.12 from this web page. It will automatically find and reuse your old profile, which has your messages, settings, and address books

Signatures about them and how to do them
first see this
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Signatures_%28Thunderbird%29
also see this for the colours of signatures http://kb.mozillazine.org/Signature_display_color
i think this is how it is done
Tools>Account Settings>Then tick attach a signature>then type in the white box the signature that you want

Where are release notes for 2.0.0.6?

Post by wicket »

Thank you for this thread! I can't find the "release notes" for 2.0.0.6, despite persistent searching. So I don't know what differences to expect. For example, I'm not sure that my TBird filter to move Junk mail to Trash -- when it comes thru my spam-prevention system on IMAP -- is working. Does the "filtering" URL you've listed still apply to this new version? Many thanks!

I'm stickifying this since the 1.5.0.x to 2.0.0.x autoupdate has now started...

<<Rollback

Can't find the link...? I have all my business appointments in the Calendar, and the auto-update installed, THEN said that the calendar was disabled... I need to keep my mail AND my calendar. Rolling back should do this, yes?

Thank you very much!

^^i think that this is the link http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla ... /1.5.0.10/

Best Regards Alex :)

Also if you need to update to 2.0.0.6 on Ubuntu ... Read this http://ubuntuzilla.wiki.sourceforge.net/
This has scripts to download and install the 2.0.0.6 official build. You will still have the 1.5.0.12 build listed in the Add/Remove menu... Don't worry about this.
It will also sort out the link, so you can launch it as normal....

(I found it hung when trying to back up the profile, so do it manually, and choose no in the script)

If you are getting garbled text in your message list pane:

rsx11m wrote:This sounds like you have the same problem discussed in http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=576595 and a couple of other posts. In brief, Thunderbird 2.0 is using a graphics feature that some combination of cards and drivers (specifically nVidia) cause to produce the effect you describe. There are a couple of options:

1. Look at this hotfix at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/5204
2. updating or modifying the driver of your graphics card
3. reducing hardware acceleration (potentially at the cost of performance in Thunderbird and other applications)
4. try switching off the "zebra" effect as described in http://kb.mozillazine.org/Zebra_striping (that's a bit of manual work)
5. switch to a simpler theme, e.g., https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/3791 (Whiteheart)

If you just upgraded from 1.5.0.12, you didn't see this before since it occurred first time with 2.0.0.0 and this feature wasn't used in the old branch. If you install themes or extensions, note that you have to download them first with Firefox and then use Tools > Add-ons in Thunderbird to install them.

New report from mscott:

* If you were using the ScheduleWorld extension with Thunderbird 1.5.0.x and your folders disappeared when you updated to Thunderbird 2, please disable this extension and restart Thunderbird. Your folders should now show up again.

If you are using 1.5.0.* and find the Webmail Hotmail extension stops working.... Update Thunderbird to 2.0.0.6 and then Update the Webmail and Hotmail extensions.

I've unlocked and unstuck this thread since the autoupdate has been available for several weeks. The remaining sticky includes a link to Thunderbird 2.0 installation issues. I added a link in that article to point to this thread.
