How to add Outlook Express to Firefox Toolbar
Is there an easy understandable way to add an Outlook Express E-Mail Icon (link) to the toolbar in Firefox that would allow you to utilize Outlook Express E-Mail from Firefox as you can from Internet Explorer?
This would include the ability to send and receive e-mail, create local “inbox” & “outbox” folders, etc. just as you can when you open Outlook Express from within Internet Explorer.
The most hopeful info located thus far stated “Download and Install “Get Mail” version 3.2. Click on Tools>Add-ons>Get Mail 3.2>Option, then enter the path in the option window C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\MSIMN.EXE Done!”
Get Mail version 3.2 has an “install.rdf” file that you can read with certain programs but, how do you install this program? There is no executable file for Windows XP or other Windows version.

Re: How to add Outlook Express to Firefox Toolbar
The Get Mail program is considered a add-on/extension for Firefox. As such, it doesn't install like a so-called normal Windows program.
You actually do not open the program. You install it just as it is.

It is an extension. If you have downloaded it already click on Tools --> Add-ons --> Extension and drag and drop it into the window.

Re: How to add Outlook Express to Firefox Toolbar
Also, Outlook Express cannot be integrated into Firefox the same way that it can into IE. Microsoft have created the links that operate between their own applications.
Firefox (and Thunderbird) are Third Party Applications, and do not have access to these links....
Also remember that IE and Outlook Express are part of your Operating System. Firefox (and Thunderbird) are not....

Re: How to add Outlook Express to Firefox Toolbar
Response to Moderator Replies:
Thank you for your three replies. Have previously downloaded “getmailplus-3.2”
After unzipping the folder structure is:
getmailplus-3.2 (Main Folder)
chrome.manifest
install.rdf
readme.txt
chrome (Sub Folder)
getmail.jar
Understood your instructions to be:
Open Firefox; Click on Tools Tab
Click on Add-ons
Click on Extensions Tab
Open Windows Explorer and locate getmailplus-3.2 Main Folder
Drag the getmailplus-3.2 Main Folder into the window below the Extensions Tab
Was not successful in dragging the folder. Also tried to drag the folder into the window below the Get Add-ons Tab with no success.
Would you please give me a little more direction, as I am obviously not doing something correctly.
Thank you

Re: How to add Outlook Express to Firefox Toolbar
Don't unzip. Just drag the entire xpi file.

Re: How to add Outlook Express to Firefox Toolbar
To clarify.....
- Right click on the Install Link and choose Save Link As... (or for IE use Save Target )
- Save the .xpi file to the Desktop
- Start up Firefox, if it not already running.
- In Firefox, Go to Tools > Addons
- Drag the .xpi file to that window (DO NOT UNZIP IT !!! )
- When the countdown hits zero click Install
- Click the Restart Firefox Button that appears.
- Firefox will shut down, and Restart. See if the icon is on the Toolbar.
- If it is not, in Firefox, go to View > Toolbars > Customise.
- Find the Icon, and Drag it to the Toolbar, to the location of your choice, and click OK in the Dialogue Box.

Re: How to add Outlook Express to Firefox Toolbar
Additional Questions to Moderator Response:
Thank you for your recent clarifications and for your continued patience with a few more questions please.
The “Get Mail” file I downloaded came from the following website.
http://webdesigns.ms11.net/getmail.html
The downloaded file is: getmailplus-3.2.zip
Question: Under clarification #2 you refer to saving the .xpi file to the Desktop. Did I download the wrong file or do I need to first do something with this file before dragging it anywhere?
Question: Under clarification #‘s 4 & 5 you open Firefox and go to the Tools Tab, click on Add-ons and drag the .xpi file to that window. The Add-ons screen has four Tabs. Which Tab do you click on before dragging the .xpi file to that Tabs window?
Thank you again for your help and patience.

Re: How to add Outlook Express to Firefox Toolbar
Because you downloaded the file with IE, it renames the filename.... You may need to alter filetype to .xpi
OR Try again downloading the Extension using FIREFOX.
Either, USING FIREFOX, LEFT Click the INSTALL Link to Install the Extension Directly (You will need to click Allow in the Yellow Confirmation Bar)
or RIGHT Click the Install Link to Download,
or Left Click on the Save To Desktop Link.
It does work better if you use Firefox to do this...
You can select the Extensions Tab in that window, as you are Installing an Extension

Re: How to add Outlook Express to Firefox Toolbar
Thank you Moderator's. Especially steviex.
Below is a final sequence that successfully and easily added the Outlook Express E-Mail feature to the Firefox Toolbar. Hopefully these steps will be made available and save individuals hours of frustration in the future.
How to add Outlook Express to Firefox Toolbar: 12/13/2008
Procedure for Windows XP Pro using Internet Explorer 6 and Outlook Express E-Mail.
1) Install Firefox and start this program to access the Internet.
2) Go to: http://webdesigns.ms11.net/getmail.html. Under Get Mail Plus Version 3.x Right click on ‘Save to Desktop.’ Click ‘Save Link As.’ Download ‘getmailplus-3.x.xpi.’
If you download the file using Internet Explorer, the file will download as a .zip file extension and will NOT work.
3) In Firefox go to the ‘Tools’ Tab and click ‘Add-ons.’ Click the ‘Extensions’ Tab.
4) Drag the ‘getmailplus-3.x.xpi’ file to the window below the ‘Extensions’ Tab.
5) Click ‘Install’ if it does not automatically do so and then restart Firefox.
6) If the ‘Get Mail’ icon does not appear in the Firefox toolbar, go to ‘View > Toolbars’ and click on ‘Customize.’
7) Find the ‘Get Mail’ Icon, Drag it to a location of your choice on the Firefox Toolbar and click ‘OK’ in the Dialogue Box.
8) In Firefox go to the ‘Tools’ Tab and click ‘Add-ons.’ Locate ‘Get Mail Plus 3.x’ and click on ‘Options.’ This allows you to set the path to Outlook Express on your computer hard drive (Usually C:\). Example: C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\MSIMN.EXE.
This procedure successfully created an E-Mail icon in the Firefox Toolbar and allowed access to Outlook Express E-Mail for sending, receiving and saving e-mails just as with Internet Explorer.

OR while on http://webdesigns.ms11.net/getmail.html just on the Install link right beside the Save to desktop link. The quickest way to install this extension if not already saved to disk.
Two very old well known ways to install Extensions off disk that works just as good or better is to Drag and drop the extensionname.xpi onto a open Firefox window OR while in Firefox go to File->Open File (Ctrl+O) and browse to the extensionname.xpi and click to install. Another more newer way is to type about:config in the location (address) bar and Toggle the extensions.hideInstallButton to false and then go to Tools->Add-ons Extensions or Themes and there should now be a [Install button] (hidden by default) where you go about installing like the File-Open File method. The [Install] button method allows you to easily install Themes off disk.

You are replying to an elderly thread (2008). Locking. I suspect that the problem has either been solved or forgotten by now.
