Safely Trying Nightlies & Being a Good Nightly Build User

Post by Uncle Asad »

More and more there are Gecko-related fixes (e.g., less sucky plug-in performance, more flexible form widgets, better font handling) or Camino features (Tabsposé, trunk’s new autocomplete) in trunk (Cm2.1-M1.9) or CAMINO_2_0_BRANCH (Cm2.0-M1.9) nightlies that you may want to try out. The nightly build link from caminobrowser.org now points to CAMINO_2_0_BRANCH (Cm2.0-M1.9) nightlies.

We certainly encourage the adventurous among you to try out the trunk (Cm2.1-M1.9) and CAMINO_2_0_BRANCH (Cm2.0-M1.9) nightlies—the more testing they get, the better—but be aware that we do not guarantee the stability of the nightlies. In addition, trunk (Cm2.1-M1.9) and CAMINO_2_0_BRANCH (Cm2.0-M1.9) nightlies make incompatible, irreversible changes to certain key files in your profile folder, so that those files (and the information they contain) are no longer usable if you go want to go back to Camino 1.6(.x).

When trying a trunk (Cm2.1-M1.9) or CAMINO_2_0_BRANCH (Cm2.0-M1.9) nightly:

• Be sure to make a backup copy of your profile folder (~/Library/Application Support/Camino) before using a trunk (Cm2.1-M1.9) or CAMINO_2_0_BRANCH (Cm2.0-M1.9) nightly, and store the backup copy in a safe place in case you decide you like 1.6 better and need to restore your profile to a 1.6-compatible version.

• Making periodic backups of your profile, just like any other important file on your computer, is always a good thing to do in general.

• If you just want to check something out briefly and don't intend to try the trunk (Cm2.1-M1.9) or CAMINO_2_0_BRANCH (Cm2.0-M1.9) for any period of time, you might want to use Troubleshoot Camino instead. Troubleshoot Camino will launch Camino using a special, temporary profile while leaving your existing profile untouched. After you quit, launching Camino normally will again use your regular profile.

As always, thanks for testing Camino, and please report bugs you find (after searching first).

Being a Good Nightly Build User, or How to Keep QA Happy

Post by Uncle Asad »

If you're a nightly build user, before filing a bug or reporting problems in this forum, please:

* Check one of the "recent bugs" feeds or queries below
* Make sure you are not using any third-party add-ons/hacks
* Read Brent Simmons (of NetNewsWire) on bug reports and feature requests

By viewing or subscribing to one of the recent bugs feeds or queries, it will make it easier for you to see new bugs as they're filed and you won't have to come here asking "Hey, does anyone know about this yet?"

Please do not report Camino bugs in Bugzilla or submit Talkback reports if you have third-party add-ons/hacks installed. Instead, uninstall all third-party add-ons/hacks and try to reproduce your bug. If you can reproduce it with no add-ons, report it to the Camino developers. If you can't reproduce your bug with no add-ons, report the bug to the developer of the add-on; most likely the add-on is the source of the bug.

Reporting bugs in third-party products via Bugzilla is inappropriate as it wastes Camino developer resources and does not notify the relevant developer that there is a problem with his software. Please make sure bug reports are going to the appropriate place.

Useful Queries and Feeds

* Camino bugs filed in the last 30 days:
Bugzilla Query or Feed

* Camino bugs FIXED in the last 30 days:
Bugzilla Query or Feed

* Camino checkins in the last 30 days:
(This will be roughly equivalent to the FIXED bugs, but there will be some variance due to checkins for bugs that are not fixed, checkins for cross-product bugs, etc.)

* Checkins affecting Camino in the last 30 days:
(This is based on the files checked out when building Camino and therefore includes checkins to files not used by Camino; it is a superset of the previous query. There is no way to create a corresponding Bugzilla query, because there's no way for that query to know what checkins from other Bugzilla products affect Camino source.)
