RSS Reader Panel -> Sage
I had been using the "RSS Reader Panel" by flyson: http://fls.moo.jp/moz/rssreader.html
I had tweaked a few things myself (like making the check feeds option into a prominent button) when I discovered a derivative version called "Sage" with this and other UI tweaks: http://sage.mozdev.org/

thanks a lot! there are some nice improvements over the original. I like the check feeds button. I had some questions about the extension a few months ago. Someone wrote a couple of tweaks for the extension, im not sure if they would be of interest, but i'm passing them along

I mostly noticed the following:
RSS Reader's Tools>Check Updtate is readily available as a button on the sidepanel's menu. RSS Reader's View and Tools menu are replaced with a streamlined Options menu. I think Sage's covered all RSS Reader's available options, but I'm not sure as I've uninstalled Sage's.
Despite Sage's nicer leaf icon and streamlined look, there was an extra empty toolbar that I didn't like. I don't know what function, if any, did it serve.

That might have been the status bar, which got moved from the bottom to near the top for some reason... I don't like that either.

Another difference is it includes a couple of parsing fixes.

rssreader users,
I've created a mozdev project to encourage community development of this valuable tool flyson has given us. The project can be found at http://sage.mozdev.org A first release is available which contains fixes and enhancements that I've made over the last few months as well as some patches from the community. More specifically, Sage 1.0 adds:
- Parsing and display of item publish dates
- Various UI tweaks
- More robust uninstall
- ATOM parsing fix, broken html tags fix (hat tip to Chris Farmer)
For those who want to evaluate it, Sage will peacefully coexist with your current rssreader installation.
I'm seeing lots of interest in extending this tool, which is exciting. If you'd like to contribute, please get in touch.

Given that Sage has its own site on www.mozdev.org with bug tracking and so, I have actually submitted a couple of tweaks. However, it looks like Peter Andrews has been busy, and hasn't yet got back to me.
These both change the exiting HTML/CSS rendering, try ticking the "Open Feed in Contents Area" option to see what this does. Basically it turns the RSS/ATOM feed into HTML using the specified CSS file.
There is more about this on the RSS Reader Panel's website, http://fls.moo.jp/fswiki/?p=RRP+Contents+Area
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anyway, you lot might have some feedback... so please help by testing!
I am using Firefox 0.8, installation steps:-
(1) Uninstall Sage 1.0 (if you have it)
(2) Download Sage 1.0p3 (my version), call it "sage_1_0p3.xpi":
http://www.mozdev.org/bugs/attachment.c ... ction=view
(problem with filename)
or:
http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/mau ... _1_0p3.xpi
(3) Install this by doing File, Open, and picking "sage_1_0p3.xpi"
(4) Restart Firebird 0.8
(5) Set prefs as normal (see later for the new stuff)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bug 6452 - Support site logos
http://www.mozdev.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=6452
This is quite straight forward; If you use the "Open Feeds In Contents Area" option any RSS feed with a site logo should have the logo displayed above the site title.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
<b>Bug 6423</b> - Option to use the web panel
http://mozdev.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=6423
This is a bit harder to explain without pictures. I wanted to have the list of stories take up all of the left hand column (replacing the feeds). And I wanted to see more than just the story title, at a glance.
Hense, I put the "pretty HTML/CSS version" into the web panel.
(1) Set you preferences as normal, except
(2) Tick Options, Open Feeds In Contents Area
(3) Untick Options, Show Feed Item List
(*) Left click a feed will open it in the current tab
(*) Middle click a feed will open it in a new tab
Then, for those feeds you want to open in the sidebar by default:
(1) right click
(2) select properties
(3) Tick "Load this bookmark in sidebar"
(*) Left click a feed will open it in the webpanel side bar (replacing the feeds)
(*) Middle click a feed will still open it in a new tab
I use a modified version of "Simple Blue" CSS with the font sizes and margins made smaller.

<i>Edited to fix a link; Edited to add mirror for sage_1_0p3.xpi</i>

Ahh. Looks like I have accidently messed up the paths inside the XPI (ZIP) file, so the installer can't find it. Hang on...
New version Try sage 1.0p3, currently only available via mozdev which has a problem with the filename - you must rename it to a .xpi before trying to use it. (I edited the links in the post above)
To help with testing, here are a few feeds with a logo:
New Scientist (boring name as logo)
http://www.newscientist.com/syndication/news.rdf
The Register (again, they don't just their nice logo - weird)
http://www.theregister.co.uk/headlines.rss
http://mozillazine.org/contents.rdf
mozillaZine (RSS feed, no article text)
NASA's Earth Observatory (uses their Image of the Day)
http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/eo.rss
The code as it doesn't acutally check for the a link on the image - I just use the same link as the title. So far the NASA example is the only one I'm aware of where this is different.

Everything's working well for me. The opening in the sidebar and logo for feeds are nice touches. The latter feature though could probably use a toggle option, in case anyone would rather not download/display the logo for whatever reason.
From your first screenshot, now I understand why that status bar is there. It makes sense in that view mode, but with 'Show Feed Item List' enabled, I still think the implementation of the status/feed-title area in RSS Reader is best.

I am glad I found this thread. I was using the RSS extension until the new EM prevented installation. Sage installed and seems to be working well although the new EM does not show it.
The most obvious thing I noticed that would puzzle new users was the lack of feed content even though the feed URLs seemed to be doing something. The option "Show Feed Item List" should be checked by default.

Question on sageanalyst.net
Around the time I installed Sage in Firefox I noticed it there was a connection made to sageanalyst.net. I tried to browse to this URL but the home page was empty. Does anyone know what this is for ?
