AntiVirus Program

Post by babieca »

I've just about had it with AVG. It messes with All Things Mozilla- Firefox, Thunderbird, Sunbird, they all are buggy, slow, freeze, and prone to crash since I downloaded it.

Any favorites from the FREE world?

And please don't suggest Avira, I had that before and it's harder to deal with than hemorrhoids in July (and even harder to get rid of). ](*,)

The list Limpet posted is not a "take your pick" list. The only antivirus there is Avast. The others are antispyware and antiadware programs. All can be installed on the same machine with no conflicts. And, yes, I also recommend Avast.

Thanks for the suggestions, I already use a couple of those spyware programs.

Avast...
I went to the site but the "free" version has to be registered within 60 days to prevent ...what...deactivation? Does it stop being free after 60 days? I wasn't looking for a free trial, I was looking for a free program.

The registration is free and very minimal. You have to do it every 14 months. Yes, if you don't register in 90 days, it will deactivate. It's NOT a free trial. It's a free program that requires registration. You don't even have to enter your full name.

Hi babieca,
This is from the site's registration page...
[q]
avast! 4 Home Edition works for 60 days after the installation in demo mode. You will obtain your FREE license key by E-mail after the registration. The license key is valid for 1 year. After one year you will need to just re-register.
[/q]
No problemo.
Free as.....
They probably like to keep checks on how many users they have.

Thanks, all of you, for your suggestions and info.
AVG has circled the drain and departed with a huge gurgle.
Avast seems to be working fine, was a little surprised about the user interface but it was easy to figure out. Now I just have to get used to that icon in the task bar randomly twitching and twirling to let me know it's on the job.

I also downloaded ccleaner as was suggested.
I'm afraid to delete anything [-o<
I don't know what the suffixes signify but that's all on me- back to school...

Thanks again for all your help.

Yes, the Avast interface is quite unfortunate. Fortunately, there are other skins for it. The second one that's included is nice and there are others that you can download. Click on the little doohickey in the upper left to get the menu and select skins.

Just to clarify. It doesn't run in the background at all. It's a passive immunizing app which you only run once ever week or so. It takes just a minute to update your IE immunizations and Firefox cookie blocklist.

^, I stand corrected. Ta Alan.
Spyware Blaster does indeed use "passive protection".
(I was using my term).
But, it does protect you all the time.

"But, it does protect you all the time." That it does. I use it myself.

I just installed AVG 8 yesterday seeing that 7.5 will be discontinued at the end of this month. I've also noticed a slow down with processes. AVG 7.5 worked fine. I didn't install the Link Scanner. Surfing seems to be okay. It's just everything else.

Now I just have to get used to that icon in the task bar randomly twitching and twirling to let me know it's on the job.

I had Avast once before and if I remember correctly, you can turn off the icon animation and also combine the two icons if you wish. It's somewhere in the options.

I'm gonna get Avast again since I'm not happy with the way AVG is now.
