I'm using IMAP access to Gmail account with Thunderbird 3.0 b2. The behavior I want to produce, is that messages should not be stored locally, and downloaded only when needed (being red). And after some time removed from local storage leaving only headers.
There is a mail.server.default.autosync_offline_stores setting, which is "true" by default in beta 2. I set it to false, and still I see that my folders which match IMAP account in my profile contain a big amount of data, basically keeping all messages locally. How can I get the behavior described above? Compacting folders doesn't seem to remove it for some reason.

I figured out how to do it. In Account Settings > Syncing & Disk Space > [ ] Keep messages for this account on this computer. Just turn this setting off.

Still, it's strange that compacting folders when this setting is on doesn't reduce the local storage.

you'd have to delete the local store explicitly from the local file system
