Install Thunderbird in Linux Debian

Post by ram7lc »

Trying to install Thunderbird-2.0.0.21.tar.gz in Debian Lenny 5.0.0

Downloaded the Thunderbird file to my Home directory

Used terminal and cd to /home/ray66

Tar -zxvf thunderbird-2.0.0.21.tar.gz

All files extracted with the exception of thunderbird.exe

Cannot open thunderbird from a terminal or from system files

The thunderbird file is a shell script and also the mozilla file

The thunderbird release notes have no instructions on how to install thunderbird

How do I get thunderbird to install and run in this distro.

Have you been to Add/Remove Programs ?? You can find Thunderbird there....

There is no thunderbird.exe because the .exe is Windows and not used on Linux.

Well you found the thunderbird script so all you basically need to do now is run Thunderbird as there is no install, make etc. Type in ./thunderbird or make a dektop/panel launcher/shortcut to the Thunderbird script.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry for the delay but reinstalled thunderbird to assure I had a non-corrupted copy.

./thunderbird returns error this is a directory

/home/ray66/thunderbird/thunderbird does not open anything

I have tried all kinds of combinations of command with no success

Any further help will be appreciated.

Have you tried installing from the Add/Remove Programs menu ??

Read THIS..... http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Ins ... x+on+Linux

It is written for Firefox, but applies to Thunderbird ......
