Forcing Firefox to NEVER EVER open a new firefox window instance

is there anyway of forcing Firefox to NEVER EVER open a new firefox window instance.. and instead only open a spawned window as a tab instead as a bare minimum, i'd rather put up with a tab window popup then a new firefox window.. its just silly.... And I really hate new firefox windows being created as they always steal focus.. and most the times its just some useless advert.

Or maybe some recommended ad blocking addon that allow quick and easy methods of setting which websites are to never be allowed to open a popup window? or a way of blocking a popup window that instantly kills/removes that window?

Popups should be blockable as above. But, if you want to prevent all new firefox windows, from clicking links in email etc, you can divert all requests for new windows to open in tabs instead:
Set this http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.link. ... estriction to 0
Set this http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.link.open_newwindow to 3

thanks will look into those settings.. I do have adblock plus.. but tbh really think it could do with an improvement in the user experience.. it seems more focused to just disabling inPage adverts/ flash/images etc. than providing a easier way of blocking entire pages/new window popups etc.. or even those ultra annoying and crap overlay layer type adverts that make you wait for the skip button to appear... I mean is there any adblocking addon that can neutralize those type of ads.. they really are useless i'm sure most people just move there cursor to the skip button area before most the layer ad has even loaded.
