Firefox "stopped" and pages won't load.

Post by Bazza »

This is a strange one. Frequently when browsing Firefox suddenly refuses to load any page and simply says stopped in the status bar at the bottom. No matter what page I select it refuses to even attempt to load them. Quitting Firefox and trying again works for all pages but this can repeat itself at any time. When it has done this I have loaded IE7 and successfully loaded the selected pages to test it isn't my connection but returning to Firefox it refuses to work until I quit and relaunch. It doesn't happen say after 10 minutes or an hour. It can happen twice in succession or go hours working fine. Any ideas? Running Firefox 3.0.7 under Vista x64 SP1.

Cheers,
Bazza

Try running in Safe Mode - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode

Don't forget that Safe Mode is a diagnostic tool. If you see one or more problems go away when you run in Safe Mode, that means that one or more of your extensions (see Tools | Add ons | Extensions to see which you have installed) and/or your selected theme (see Tools | Add ons | Themes to see which you are using) is causing the problem. The order in which extensions are installed or enabled can also cause the problem.

I am having the same problem, but ONLY with Myspace. This started when I updated to build 3.0.7. I am currently running 3.0.8, and it is still doing it. After I log in, Myspace may work fine about 5% of the time. Other times, it starts to load, partially loads the page, then says "stopped" in the status bar after a few seconds. Reloading does nothing. Once this happens, Firefox is pretty much frozen. Any page I try to load after that just says "stopped" in the status bar. After restart of Firefox, everything is fine except for Myspace. I have tried unloading extensions, and nothing works.

System stats:
Win Vista Home Premium x64 SP1
Firefox 3.0.8

Save Image in Folder 1.2.5

I have version 3.0.8 installed, and a business website I created was not loading the page completely.

On certain other web pages, this hanging/partial page load also occurred.

Viewing page in IE7, page loads with no problems.

I tried:

Viewing the page I created from the host server directly, page loaded fine.

Safe mode with all add ons and themes disabled, page partially loaded.

Going back to previous versions 3.0.4 and 3.0.6, page partially loaded.

Safe mode on previous versions, still no joy.

Created new profile with no themes or add ons, page partially loaded

Installed Fasterfox to toy with optimized page loading, no joy.

I finally installed the latest version of Java, which crashed Firefox 3.0.8.during the installation, but successfully installed it.

Now page loads with Fasterfox setting on "Courteous" but on "Optimized" page hangs loading images.

Updating Java may help?

I have been having this problem as well, except that I am running a mac. The pages refuse to load. Like Bazza said, quitting and then trying again is works, but it is very frustrating. I end up going back to Safari, which I don't like to use. Mac doesn't have a safe mode such as PC does.
Anyone else having firefox/mac problems?

Am having the exact same problem, and as I said in another post, it's beyond frustrating!

I use Vista Home Premium and have posted a few times in the support forum asking for help with this. I've followed all the suggestions given to me there, with no luck.
When FF stops responding I'm unable to use Task Manager to shut it down.
I've created several new profiles with no add ons and it happens with the new ones, as well.
At this point when one profile stops working, I simply go to another until that one stops.
I'm finally forced to restart my computer.

Since I've had this problem for quite a while I've done a lot of searching on the forums and notice others posting about this.

I love FF but I'm at the end of my rope with this issue.

Help!!

Do you have Zone Alarm installed?

malliz, I do.
But I've used Zone Alarm and FF together for years. This only started happening within the last few months.
