Firefox loads slow on my computer -Windows XP

Post by mmmm33 »

When clicking on my Firefox desktop, it takes anywhere from 30 seconds to a minute to load....longer when I first boot-up!

Are you running any extensions or themes? Do you have a lot of RSS feeds?

Understand that Firefox is not loaded into memory like Internet Explorer is. Internet Explorer is built into the operating system so it's always faster on loading up. So if you're comparing the speed to Internet Explorer, it's a unfair comparison.

However, there are something to increase the startup speed of Firefox. See the following link.

I have the same problem. Loading the first instance of Firefox takes about 30 seconds, and task manager shows 49 to 50% CPU usage. Once Firefox is loaded I can load a second instance of it and it loads up within 1 or 2 seconds. Firefox used to load fine on my computer. I am using Windows 7 RC and running and Intel Dual Core E8400 with 4G of memory.

Removing Avast Anti Virus program from my computer seems to have fixed the problem.

It's interesting to see this point of view. I can't say fore sure if I agree or not, but it is something I will think about now.

For those of you that are on Windows vista/7 on Firefox 4 betas or RC1 try the extension mentioned here: First link in Taras Glek post.
Taras Glek Startup-Service extension Not for Firefox 3.6.x or WinXP
The extension is a) wrapper around a service .exe that deletes firefox prefetch
files and b) wrapper .exe that preloads firefox in a more efficient manner than
windows does by default.
The extension installs a "Firefox Service" and removes it on uninstall. It also
adds a 'faster firefox' shortcut to the desktop. In theory having this
extension installed + launching via the "faster firefox" shortcut should result
in the 2x speedup that this bug aims for.

Windows XP users are out of luck that extension is only for Windows vista/7 only.
