How can I make Firefox use KDE file dialog boxes?
Firefox Open/Save dialog box looks stupid. Recently I tried out a Gnome distro and realized that the Firefox dialog box was copied from Gnome. Why would Firefox use a Gnome-style dialog box which sucks?
Anyway, that is not my question. What I want to know is if there is a way to use KDE dialog boxes in Firefox? Yes, the ones that let you access storage media.

Your source said, "True: Use the system file picker if available. (Default)"
Mine is set to true, yet Firefox doesn't use MY system file picker, which is KDE. It uses a Gnome-like file picker. I want Firefox to use the system file picker so it would work the same way as all my other apps.
What I'm looking for is an about:config setting to use the KDE file picker. I hope someone could tell me about it.

Nope, Firefox is a GTK app but is not made by the Gnome people; it is made by the Mozilla people. FYI Gnome's browser is Epiphany, which also uses Gecko.

It is made with Gnome (gtk) in mind more as KDE is not really focused on quite so much. Firefox 3.0 for example will have a new theme for Linux users called Gnomestripe where the icons will make use of the gtk theme native icons if available. Firefox 3.0 will also be better with the radio and buttons due to gtk theme as Firefox 2.0 and earlier looks like Win95.
There is or was a rather old hack to use the kdialog in Firefox, however Firefox will freeze while the open/save dialog is opened until it is finnished saving etc.

No I don't like it. As I said, I want to access "KDE Storage Media" which can be accessed by all my apps except Firefox.

Last I heard Firefox was made for many different platforms and not for a particular desktop. FYI I even run Firefox in Windows! Surprised? Yes Firefox was also made for Windows! You might be interested to know it was made for MacOS too! I don't think Firefox is made "for" any particular desktop configuration. It may be made with Gnome compatibility in mind, but that doesn't mean it is made for Gnome!
Last time I checked, Firefox does NOT use the Gnome file picker in Windows. It uses the Windows file picker! So much for your claim of Firefox being made FOR the Gnome!
Some KDE compatibility is also needed. After all, the pref did say it will use the "system file dialog". What system? I don't even use Gnome. How can it be my "system"?

Ah, a good answer at last. Thanks James. I wish all replies in these forums as smart as yours.

So what is this thread then about? Why do you have problems? Gotta love arrogant anonymous posters online.Anonymous wrote:Last I heard Firefox was made for many different platforms and not for a particular desktop. FYI I even run Firefox in Windows! Surprised? It's about getting the KDE file dialog in Firefox. Something you were circumventing be claiming that Firefox was made for Gnome. Your message had an implicit statement that support for KDE dialogs is something Firefox will never do, because it was made *for* Gnome.
Since Firefox uses Windows dialogs under Windows, and uses the Finder under Mac, and uses the Gnome file picker under Gnome, it makes sense that it should use the KDE file picker in KDE.

Because Gnome is ugly and I hate it.

Change the ui.allow_platform_file_picker to false ..? .. http://konquefox.free.fr/index.html#trick_filepicker
There was a "Bug 298848 – Use native KDE Filepicker because more features" but please do not comment with "Why not" comments and such as it would be useless spam to the many who would get emailed. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/page.cgi?id=etiquette.html

Re:
Yes, Firefox file-picker still looks crazy and oldish in Firefox 3 .....
You can have a look to Kgtk [ http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=36077 ]
And Kgtk is available for Kubuntu Jaunty in PPA repositories: https://launchpad.net/~kgtk/+archive/ppa
sources.list:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kgtk/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
Hope that Firefox 4 will finally use Qt4 libraries.

Diorser, as helpful as you intended that to be, I doubt that any of the original participants are still monitoring a topic from 18 months ago.
