Hmm, people have a point about the "The Browser, Reloaded" slogan... the original Matrix movie was good, but people hate the sequels. The slogan's Matrix-sequel reference thus gives an impression of trying to be "hip" while being painfully not so.

Some updates, since I haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere else:
  • Firefox has a new tagline – no more "sequel reference."
  • The new beta front page is great! (Before anyone says anything, check it out again: <a href="http://website-beta.mozilla.org/" rel="bookmark" title="mozilla.org">it’s just been redesigned!</a>) The think that everyone cares about right now (Firefox) is above the fold, and everything else is compactly organized.
And yet <em>more</em> observations and feedback:
  • The <a href="http://website-beta.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/buttons.html" rel="bookmark" title="Promoting Mozilla Thunderbird">Thunderbird buttons page</a> is still trying to use the old design.
  • The <a href="http://website-beta.mozilla.org/products/mozilla1.x/sysreq.html" rel="bookmark" title="Mozilla 1.7 / 1.7.1 System Requirements">SeaMonkey system requirements page</a> still has the old SeaMonkey screenshot/logo at the top. It should be changed to the new screenshot and logo used on the <a href="http://website-beta.mozilla.org/products/mozilla1.x/" rel="bookmark" title="Mozilla 1.7 / 1.7.1">SeaMonkey product page</a> (it’s a background image on that page).
  • There should be some indication as to what the Planet Mozilla section contains. Most newcomers won't have seen any Planet website before, so they’ll be wondering what <a href="http://www.meyerweb.com/eric/thoughts/2004/08/28/antispinward/" rel="bookmark" title="Eric’s Archived Thoughts: Antispinward">the latest entry</a> (as of this writing) has to do with Mozilla.
  • The "Learn more about Firefox..." link on the front page points to <samp>http://website-beta.mozilla.org/#dfg</samp>. I think it should point to <a href="http://website-beta.mozilla.org/products/firefox/" rel="bookmark" title="Mozilla Firefox">the Firefox product page</a>.
  • The "award winning" link points to <samp>http://website-beta.mozilla.org/shelf.html</samp>. I think you meant <samp>http://website-beta.mozilla.org/products/firefox/shelf.html</samp>.
  • The "Featuring: Firefox" text should link to the product page as well.
  • The <a href="http://www.mozilla.org/security/" rel="bookmark" title="Security Center">Security Center</a> is gone. Going to <samp>http://website-beta.mozilla.org/security/</samp> (the logical beta version of the current page) redirects to <samp>http://website-beta.mozilla.org/projects/security/</samp> (the Security Project). It’s not the same. I think this is because of a rewrite statement that redirects <samp>w-b.m.o/<var>projectname</var></samp> into <samp>w-b.m.o/products/<var>projectname</var></samp> or <samp>w-b.m.o/projects/<var>projectname</var></samp>. The Security Center is currently located directly in w.m.o.
  • The big, slanted screenshot of Firefox on the front page has some jagged edges. Some anti-aliasing might help.

It's not about "if it looks good" it's about if a reader will actually be able to read and UNDERSTAND what (s)he reads. Much reasearch has been done on this area and shows that long lines of text makes readability drop like a stone once you get above 10-15 words per line.

Here is a link that explains some of this.
http://www.webstyleguide.com/type/lines.html

I didn't relize that. Good to know!

I made a new <a href="http://www.linerider.com/mozilla/">Mozilla</a> home page that shows how I think the page layout should look like. I based it on the above comment and andkons <a href="http://www.andkon.com/stuf/mozillanewstrategy/">article</a>.

Note: It is just a sugested layout. The page content and code would have to be polished up.

Wow, that's a huge improvement, very organised. The tabs are in the wrong place in Opera though.

change screenshot-site to mozilla.org

Post by watzlaw »

In general i think the new site is a great step forward. Especially the new products-page is very nice. i dislike that there's sometimes a menu on the left side and sometimes not. It should be always there or never.

It should be more obivous in which section i am. currently there is no visual indication. it would be possible to use a slightly other color for the currently displayed tab (eg 'products','support',etc).

The start-page http://website-beta.mozilla.org/ should become improved:
* The headlines (like 'get thunderbird', 'mozilla-suite') shouldn't be links or they should look like links.
* Does cnet.com donates money to the mozilla-foundation or why is cnet.com used for the screenshot of firefox and not http://website-beta.mozilla.org/ itself? (maybe it would be cool if the visible part of the screenshot contains a part of the screenshot (and so on).
* People who come first to mozilla.org don't need all these news links at the bottom. They should become moved to a seperate news-page
* The light-blue firefox box doesn't need two links to get fx on CD

the site should be self-complete.

Post by Yamaguchi »

The newly desinged site contains too many references outside mozilla.org (e.g. Planet Mozilla and mozillaZine.org) which the Japanese Translation Team does not have the right nor the resource to translate.

The site should be self-complete as much as possible and should be more friendly for web site localizeres.

Regards,

YAMAGUCHI Satoru
The Japanese Translation Team.

'Why Switch to Firefox?' Page - New Content

Post by omstedall »

After a lot of headaches I have finally put together the content I promised. Because it is long, and features alot of text formating, I am giving it to you as a PDF. I have included my revised bullets below. Each of these will be hyperlinked and will take you to the relevant section of the 'Why?' page.

You can view the article here: http://v3.itr.cn/downloads/firefox%20features.pdf

Please post your feedback in this forum.

Note: You will notice that I have removed the awards from the bullets themselves. This is because I think that the awards should go in a box on the right, with a nice 'Oscar'-syle award image and the quotes underneath. This way they will stand out.

Also, I admit that there are areas that probably still need work, but I thought it would be good to show you what I have so far to get some feedback.

Finally! The Porn Has Arrived!

Perhaps Mozilla.org should in the future try to censor itself on what content gets on its frontpage:

And the tabs fail in Opera 7:

Why not mention Internet Explorer? Web browser is not something people know. "Award-Winning Technology" seems to be a fluffy phrase without meaning.

I doubt most people know or care about RSS feeds.

It sounds too nerdy. Most people dont know what ActiveX is...

Yeah, no one cares, it makes Firefox sound too technical for the average user.

The rest of the suggestions were good though.

They're now called Live Bookmarks - "Livemarks" had already been used and was felt to be too buzzword-y.

Tabs are broken differently in Opera 7.60 preview, than andkons screenshot. It's some weird Opera bug IMO.

  • Titles of Planet Mozilla entries should be cropped after a certain length. One title I'm seeing right now, "Henrik Lynggaard: It's here..... Finally, now let me get back to Doom3 :-)," is a bit too long, and part of the title flows to the bottom of the "Aug 29" tag.

  • Satoru, maybe you could contact the person who maintains the <a href="http://ryuzi.dyndns.org/mozillazine/html/modules/news/" rel="bookmark" hreflang="ja" title="mozillaZine 日本語版 – mozillaZine 和訳">Japanese translation of mozillaZine</a>. The site also has <a href="http://ryuzi.dyndns.org/mozillazine/html/backend.php" rel="bookmark" hreflang="ja" title="mozillaZine 日本語版">an RSS feed</a>.
  • Are there any Japanese-language blogs about Mozilla out there? If there are, maybe you can set up some kind of Planet Mozilla, Japanese Edition.

These suggestions might not work for all languages, but mozillaZine has translations in five languages (<a href="http://mozillazine-fr.org/" rel="bookmark" hreflang="fr" title="MozillaZine-Fr">French</a>, <a href="http://ryuzi.dyndns.org/mozillazine/html/modules/news/" rel="bookmark" title="mozillaZine 日本語版">Japanese</a>, <a href="http://benzilla.no-ip.com/mozillazine/" rel="bookmark" title="Mozillazine 中 文 版">Chinese</a>, <a href="http://www.formatvorlage.de/mozine/" rel="bookmark" title="MozillaZine.de">German</a>, and <a href="http://www.mozilla.or.kr/mozilla/zine/" rel="bookmark" title="한글 mozillaZine">Korean</a>), and I know of Mozilla-related blogs in French and Spanish. I think it can be done.

Whilst browsing through bugzilla, I came across http://fxfeeds.mozillazine.org/ which in turn points to http://website-beta.mozilla.org/product ... marks.html

I assume that will be linked from the 1.0 product page, which is hidden away somewhere?

Anyway, the screen shot still shows the old RSS lightning bolt. And on the same page
