Rather than using the defaults in "Click here to always load remote images from ..." I like to add the email address to a images address book if its a email address from somebody (such as a newsletter) that I normally don't send email to, to avoid cluttering up my personal address book.

I read this article. Very informative.
But I was wondering how to enable remote images for a one-time viewing of email already filtered to the Junk folder, such as a retailer's ad. I know it is possible to first designate the email as Not Junk and then press the Load Remote Images button, but that takes the sender out of the Junk filter unless designated again as Junk.
I just want to be able to see the remote images from an occasional Junk email without removing the sender from Junk status.
Is that possible?

I seem to remember some toolbar buttons to load images and html. I don't know if it was the Buttons! extension or something else, but I will take a look.

Re: Is there anyway to automatically show remote content?
Buttons! 0.5.3.2 does have toolbar buttons for switching HTML and Images on and off in displayed email.
The HTML button does work to toggle HTML on and off in Junk email. The Images button may or may not work (not sure) on embedded images, but it does not load remote images or other content on Junk email. Too bad.
Toolbar Buttons 0.6.0.8 has a similar HTML button. But it also does not load remote images.
All of the above is on TB 3.0.

In my experience Buttons! 0.5.3.2 is problematic under TB 3.0. This matches reports on the AMO page for the extension.

Its possible to display all images from any sender, though its not recommended since malware can be embedded in images, and spammers will be able to verify your e-mail address. If you want to do this use the Config editor to toggle the preference mailnews.message_display.disable_remote_image to false

Could you also give the menu path for other Operating Systems than Linux?

It is "Tools->Options" on Windows and "Firefox/Thunderbird->Preferences" on Mac OSX.

On Linux it is due to GNOME HIG and on Mac it is due to Apple HIG (Human Interface Guidelines).
