Homepage keeps changing--Not spyware related

Post by awkm »

Hey,

I recently installed some software (digsby chat) that changed Firefox's homepage. I already spoke with their tech people and they don't know what's going on. This is no spyware related either because it keeps changing to the website that this specific program designated it to. Here is what's going on...

Basically, my prefs.js is being edited back to, I'll call it "homepage X" every time I open Firefox. Firefox just keeps editing it (browser.startup.homepage) back to "homepage X" no matter what I change it to in both the Options or straight in prefs.js. For now, I've created a user.js to override the problem but I would still like to be able to click the homepage button in the UI and not have it go to "homepage X".

Even when I have my text editor open after I make the proper changes to browser.startup.homepage, when I start Firefox up my text editor says prefs.js has been edited(Notepad++).

Any solutions? The tech guys for this program weren't able to solve anything on their end.

That program may have created a user.js file in your Profile folder - that could be the reason that prefs.js gets reset every time you open Firefox.

.
A mind is a terrible thing to waste. Mine has wandered off and I'm out looking for it.

Oh I should have made this clear... There was no user.js. The tech people already told me about this. What I do now is have my own user.js to reset my homepage. The button in the UI still redirects to "homepage X" though. Something is causing firefox to keep reseting prefs.js back to "homepage x"

Just to be sure:
Your profile folder is not "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\defaults\profile\"
The files in that folder are template files to create a new profile.

Finding the profile folder on Windows (MozillaZine KB)
"Application Data" in XP and "AppData" in Vista are hidden folders.

I also have this problem. I've found the correct profile folder, yet there is no "user.js" file. What do I do?

Do you have Windows set to hide filename extensions? If so, the file might just show as 'user'.

Try to delete prefs.js or rename to prefs.js.old to reset all the prefs to the default.
