unable to open some attachments

I am aware that I cannot open attachments with .dat file names. However, I am one of six who receive the same email message and believe that the others are able to open their attachments. This all sounds somewhat convoluted. Am I controlling the use of .dat file name or is there anyway I can open these attachments?
