snow leopard fonts
With Mac OS X 10.5, Firefox 3.5.2 had no problem with Verdana fonts.
I just installed Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6).
Using Firefox version 3.5.2, many websites' fonts changed from Verdana to some weird font.
Using Safari, those same websites still displayed their Verdana fonts.
Is this a Firefox problem?

Re: snow leopard fonts
I just installed Snow Leopard on a different Mac.
That Mac's Firefox 3.5.2 had no problems with fonts.
Could the problem be with Firefox addons?

You can do a check for corrupted fonts and other font issues:

Re: snow leopard fonts
Snow Leopard has changed the way OSX handles fonts, and for some users it's causing problems. For me, the fonts in Adium and TextWrangler were messed up. I had to restart the font server, and then everything worked fine. In the console, I entered:
Code: Select all
atsutil databases -removeUser
atsutil server -shutdown
atsutil server -ping

Had the same problem in firefox 3.5.4, bold text on all the Lucida Grande fonts, but not in safari. I typed in the atsutil stuff in terminal and it solved the problem.

Re: snow leopard fonts
How do you enter those codes in console?
And we're talking about the console in Mac OS X right?
Thanks!

Right.
Launch Terminal.app, it's in your Utilities folder.
Type
atsutil databases -removeUser
hit return
Type
atsutil server -shutdown
hit return
Type
atsutil server -ping
hit return
Type
logout
hit return and then quit the terminal app

Re: snow leopard fonts
beltzner, thanks so much for the terminal code. It worked perfectly for me.
Just remember, to restart firefox after your actions in terminal.

Re: snow leopard fonts
I tried a number of things but this finally did it for two of my imacs on snow leopard and firefox 3.55
1) Go to this folder:
user-account > Library > Fonts
2) Move to a backup folder on your hard drive the following fonts:
Arial
Arial Black
Verdana
Restart Firefox and that should do it.
If not, you can also open "Font Book" and resolve any duplicates that might still exist.

Re: snow leopard fonts
Thanks for the tips on using the Terminal to restart the font server. Using Snow Leopard 10.6.2 I didn't see any results after launching Firefox but did after restarting the machine.

Re: snow leopard fonts
I'm having a similar problem (post: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/forum/1/565533?). But it just started 2 days ago, w/o any updates, system changes, or new installs. I'm not sure these suggestions will wok, since I'm running Firefox 3.6. Also, my problem is not in fonts in loaded pages, but in the FF menus and fields themselves.
A post suggested 2 links, both of which did not solve the problem (CreativeTechs Tips: Garbled Fonts Troubleshooting Guide, Font Book 2.0 Help: Checking for damaged fonts). Any suggestions?

Re: snow leopard fonts
P.S. I've had v. 3.6 for a while, a good week before the problem began. The Terminal fix didn't work for my version of the problem (bookmarks and address bar, not pages) Help?

Re: snow leopard fonts
Restarting the font server through the Terminal works — until you restart the machine, then the problem returns. Any permanent solutions?
