How do I install a plugin for Windows Media Player? I already have Windows Media Player 10 installed on my PC, but FireFox does not seem to reconize it. Am I missing something?

<a name="TOP"></a>Guide: Plugins/Players/Search Engine & More

Introduction

* What is a Plugin? -- Plugins are programs that allow websites to provide content to you and have it appear in your browser.
* If you have installed Firefox using the window installer and have Adobe Reader, Java, Quicktime, Realplayer or Window Media Player installed on your computer, Firefox will automaticly install the plugins for you.
* Flash and Shockwave players need to be reinstalled each time you install Firefox, -- EVEN IF they are already installed on your computer.

<a name="Work"></a>Works in IE but not Firefox notes
    (1) -- Adobe Reader & Embedded/Streaming Media Guide (Windows)
  • Missing Plugin Alert
  • Audio not playing, but no Missing Plugin Alert (BGM Conductor extension)
  • Letting Firefox Claim it is Internet Explorer (User Agent Switcher extension)
  • Viewing Launch.com video
  • Download files instead of opening in browser
  • View Stream files instead of downloading (DownloadWith extension)
  • If all else fails... Despite the web standards and all these guides, many sites have embedded media that will only work in Internet Explorer. If a media file has been embedded using too much non-standard html/javascript, then it will not play in Firefox no matter what you do. This is unfortunate, but there is nothing to be done but use Internet Explorer to view the page in question. Of course, convincing the webmaster of the site to start supporting Firefox can't hurt....
    (2) -- Websites Look Wrong
    (3) -- Use the IEview extension to load the page into IE to display it correctly.
    (4) -- Firefox Activex plugin for WMP: Full Step-By-Step Guide: Embedded Windows Media in FIrefox 1.0 - 1.0.x
    (5) -- It is amazing at the amount of bad code that IE will overlook and still display the page (as far as IE is concern) ... BUT ... firefox will ONLY display the page correctly if it meets W3C web standards.
  • To check the web page coding:
Markup Validation Service checks Web documents in formats like HTML and XHTML for conformance to W3C standards.
W3C CSS Validation Service checks Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) in (X)HTML documents or standalone for conformance to W3C standatrds.
  • To learn about coding to W3C standards:
W3Schools is the largest "FREE" web developers site on the net. Learn with: (a) Full Web Building Tutorials; (b) Full Web Building References; and (c) Thousands of cut-and-paste - Try-It-Yourself On-Line Examples.
  • W3C Tools (replacements for Front Page, MS Publisher and others):
W3C Amaya Amaya is a complete online web browsing and authoring environment and comes equipped with a WYSIWYG style of interface, similar to that of the most popular commercial browsers. With such an interface, users do not need to know the HTML or CSS languages ..... and its open source and "FREE".
NVU Nvu (pronounced N-view, for a "new view") makes managing a web site a snap. Now anyone can create web pages and manage a website with no technical expertise or knowledge of HTML....... and its open source and "FREE".

Thanks for the "detailed" responses.

My problem(s) are:
1) I reinstalled Win98SE on a "refurbished" Thinkpad I just bought.
2) Turns out, my Win98SE CD is "so old" it contained IE 5.0 !!
3) IBM web site "requires" IE 5.5 or 6.0.
4) Downloaded/installed IE 6.0 and site was accessible, BUT IE browser has so many "security holes" [I need ½ dozen patches] that I don't want to use IE in the first place.

Thanks, again.

The Preferences Toolbar is a XUL overlay designed to make your web browsing experience more enjoyable and annoyance free by allowing you to quickly toggle certain navigator preferences and perform certain utility functions. For example, if you happen to find yourself visiting a site who's author thinks that red text on a yellow background constitutes an attractive color scheme, The Preferences Toolbar allows you to quickly turn off the "Custom Colors" pref, and browse that site in browser's default colors (usually white on black). Web developers will also enjoy being able to clear their browser cache with a single click, and just about everyone could use a quick user agent spoof now and then. Adblock is a content filtering plug-in for the Mozilla and Firefox browsers. It is both more robust and more precise than the built-in image blocker. Adblock allows the user to specify filters, which remove unwanted content based on the source-address. If this sounds complicated, don't worry: it's not. Just add a few filters. Every time a webpage loads, Adblock will intercept and disable the elements matching your filters.
