Java Deployment Toolkit removal

Post by janlafata »

I received a pop-up today that Firefox has blocked Java Deployment Toolkit 6.0.180.7. It's still in my plugins add-ons though and is greyed out with a red exclamation next to it and the message "Disabled For Your Protection". How do I get rid of it?

Most extensions like that can be removed by editing the registry under here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mozilla\Firefox\Extensions

However, if you choose to have Java installed you should make sure you have the latest Java (as of now, version 6 update 20) and that all other versions are uninstalled. The JavaRa utility will help you uninstall http://sourceforge.net/projects/javara/
before installing the latest version from http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Except for a few games and support for some features of Openoffice, Java is primarily used to let viruses into your system. If possible you should uninstall it. Note that Java is not the same as Javascript which is used on most webpages.

^ That registry key doesn't apply to the Java Deployment Toolkit plugin but you do need to update Java to the latest version, which is Java 6 Update 20. See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Java#On_Windows if you need help updating Java.

After updating to Java 6 Update 20 you may need to remove any leftover npdeploytk.dll files that the update did not remove (ref.).

JavaRa did not really do much to completely get rid of the last Java so I just ended up uninstalling the old version and installed the latest version, Update 20. I also made sure to delete all Java-related files and folders. Java Deployment Toolkit is back in my plugins though, but this time Firefox has not disabled it. Maybe I should not worry about it then?

I did do some research on this and found that some people are deleting npdeploytk.dll in the Java New Plugin program folder, however I do not have this dll. I have npdeployJava1.dll. I don't know if it's the same thing or not. I also found that deleting it had no effect with removing the Java Deployment toolkit.

I did find this interesting page on The Java Deployment Toolkit but it's all a little above my head. There is a reference to a registry key though and I'm wondering what would happen if I deleted it. Will wait to hear more first

the Java Deployment Toolkit that's there now is a newer version than one that had been disabled.
Does that make a difference?

Who knows ?

Java 6 Update 20 replaces the vulnerable npdeploytk.dll version of the Java Deployment Toolkit plugin (that is blocklisted) with a fixed 6.0.200.2 version of the Java Deployment Toolkit plugin named npdeployJava1.dll which is NOT blocklisted. It's OK for the new version to be enabled. The old version of the Java Deployment Toolkit plugin, if it wasn't removed by the Java update, should remain disabled. You could also remove the old version by deleting npdeploytk.dll from your system.

I found this thread from Google so I thought I would reply. Apparently, after uninstalling JDK from the list of programs in Windows, npdeployJava1.dll still remains (clever programing anyone?)

You can see if this is the case by navigating to "about:plugins" in firefox. My JDK plugin was in C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin\dtplugin location. Close firefox, go to that location and rename "npdeployJava1.dll" to "npdeployJava1" and magically the plugin is gone :D
