This seems to be a recurring problem for me: Whenever I attempt to update Firefox or otherwise click on the Firefox address in my browser bar, all my bookmarks disappear! Where did they go? I know that it is somehow possible to retrieve this info -- how can I do it? How can I stop this from happening again?
Thank you.

See this article http://kb.mozillazine.org/Lost_bookmarks
This forum thread is probably the most comprehensive post here at MozillaZine that addresses the subject of Lost Bookmarks.

Thanks Dan for the link to the article, but I went there previously and I must admit that I just get more confused. I'm 55, not 25, and do not know really too much about computers. Can't I just make a few clicks and remedy the situation? Can someone explain it to me in babytalk? It seems like this situation is a key problem with Firefox. Why can't Mozilla fix this?

John,
The vast majority of Firefox users don't ever lose their bookmarks, those that do are in a distinct minority. I am 58yo (not a computer professional, a self-taught user of 23 years) and I have had my bookmarks disappear as the result of a Firefox update exactly twice in over five years of using Firefox - and I update 4 different Firefox installations on 2 different computers everyday! That is over 1200 updates a year vs. 7 or 8 for a user running a Release version; plus those installations are tester versions of future releases and they can break at any time, but bookmarks hasn't been broken for me.
The developers fixed the problem of "truly lost bookmarks" a couple of years ago in the 1.5 versions of Firefox by providing 5 days worth of automatic backups. The one thing they didn't do was create an easy way of restoring those backups for beginner users that aren't familiar with the Windows Explorer {file system} interface in the Operating System.
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Lost_bookmark ... k_recovery
1. Locate your Profile folder - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder - open two Explorer windows - one with your Profile and the other with the \bookmarkbackups\ folder in your Profile folder open, go to the Taskbar and right-click and select Tile Windows Horizontally.
2. Right-click and drag the backup into the Profile folder, then select Copy to copy that file.
3. Rename that file to boomarks.html.
4. Start Firefox and your bookmarks should be there.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste. Mine has wandered off and I'm out looking for it.
