Download Statusbar

Post by Davezilla17 »

This Download Statusbar looks excellent. Does it autoscan with your AV? Are there any problems with setting it up to do this. I have McAfee Net Protect Plus from my ISP.

If you're wanting to use it with SM, I think you're out of luck. Seems to be only for Firefox.
But then again, I may be wrong.

There is a SeaMonkey version.

Yeah thanks ElTxolo, that's the one I meant. I was just wondering about its virus scanning. Once enabled, is it a bit like the auto-scan after a download with Firefox?

The Download Statusbar extension is just an alternative UI front end to the built in download manager backend in the toolkit code. There is a hidden pref in about:config that will tell the DLMGR to hand off downloaded files to the default AV program installed in Windows (does not work in OSX or Linux).

OK, thanks for the info. I just wondered if there was anything I should know if I configure it to auto-scan anything downloaded.

OK, I've been testing it & it seems great. It's a superb addition to SM. I notice that there is an option in the auto virus-scanning to not scan certain file types, such as jpeg, jpg, png, & gif. My knowledge of computers tends to end at Windows Vista for Dummies so I gather that it is unlikely that these file types are often infected with malware. Does anyone configure this manager to scan files such as these, or am I being just too paranoid & cautious in wanting to do this?

Some malware is embedded in or piggy backed to image files so I would definitely not bypass scanning for them. I want everything I download scanned.

OK, I just wondered if you have the Manual Virus Scan enabled. I use the Status bar but usually I tend to scan any downloaded files with SUPERAntiSpyware rather than use the Manual Virus Scan in Options - Virus Scan. What do you recommend as a good configuration for the Manual Virus Scan?

No, I use Microsoft Security Essentials and it automatically scans all downloads for me. That's what I meant when I said not to bypass scanning them, not anything about using a scanner in Download Statusbar. I was not aware it had one.

Oh OK. If you open TOOLS - ADD-ON MANAGER - EXTENSIONS you will find that if you click on DOWNLOAD STATUSBAR 0.9.87.4 you will find an OPTIONS button, if you click that it gives you a menu of GENERAL, APPEARANCE, & VIRUS SCAN where you can customise the extension somewhat.
