How does Postbox get away with charging $40 if it's Mozilla based?

There are no restrictions in the MPL or GPL/LGPL on charging money for your product. Really. Ask RMS.

They have a free version with limited features by now, but I always feel bad when open-source development is utilized as a cheap basis for a commercial product (well, you can argue that the PostBox boss wrote a lot of that code himself, but I'm still disappointed that mscott went commercial...).

Agreed.
Plus $40 is fairly steep for a fully commercial email app, IMO! It should do magic for that.
