Stratini Padded/Super for Firefox 4.0+

Post by patrickjdempsey »

Edit 7/14/2011:

Stratini Padded is now called STRATINI SUPER! Why? Because the next full version, 2.5.4, will be a merge of Stratini, Stratini padded, and even a "blacktoolbars" subtheme will be included! The black subtheme will not go as far as Black Stratini went, and will only theme the main toolbars, but it's better than nothing right? and Mozilla is apparently never going to make Themes and Personas compatible again, so whatever.

The first page of this thread deals with my early attempts to get 4.0-like styles for Stratini Padded based on the mockups from a year ago, so just ignore that stuff.

Before commenting here I ask that you please install the latest version so that we are on the same page. I've been putting together fixes for bugs as they are reported just about every day for a few weeks now:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... /versions/

Screenshots are always helpful, try to keep them under 600px wide if you post them to the forum, or just provide a link for oversized images. I'm especially interested in feedback from Mac OSX, Linux and Windows Vista/7 users as I do not have direct access to those platforms. If you are using OSX or Linux and just want to say "everything works" please feel welcome to do so!

Re: Stratini with Firefox 3.7/4.0 styles

Post by patrickjdempsey »

I'm working on updating all of my themes for Firefox 3.7. They will end up being in some ways similar to the "next" subtheme of Stratini Padded, although I will not be adding button-surrounds. I am currently using Stratini Padded as a development platform for testing these changes. You can help me test out this new style by downloading the Beta Channel version of Stratini Padded here:

https: //addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/11783/#beta-channel

Big changes so far:

- Removed support for Firefox 3.0 to use -moz-box-shadow styles.
- Revamped all buttons, scrollbars, textboxes and tabs using -moz-box-shadow to give them more depth.
- Created OS-Highlight-color soft border around hovered tabs, buttons, scrollbars.
- Changed style of tab strip background to blend into rest of the toolbox.
- Hide all tab closers until hover.
- Removed toolbar and statusbar separators.
- Made entire blank tab strip into a giant new-tab button without a border.
- Added a top border and shading behind Bookmarks Toolbar... still playing with this feature.
- Removed "next" sub-theme as it is redundant to the new restyling!

Things I'm working on:

- I may make the closer always visible on the selected tab.
- I may remove the border and shadow behind the Bookmarks Toolbar... on the fence about this one.
- Plan on updating the style of all of the Stratini buttons to have a little more depth.
- Work more on scroll bars and tab-strip new-tab button.

Let me know of any bugs or ideas you have here.

Version 2.2pre2 is up. New to this version:

- Fixed read-only text-boxes in Page Info dialog.
- Fixed buttons in Library dialog.
- Changed style of Bookmarks Toolbar shadow.
- Changed tab stripe New Tab button to hide until hover.
- Hide button surround on All Tabs button until hover tab strip.
- Made tab closer visible on selected tab.

Oh and 44,444 downloads of Stratini Padded, that's pretty sweet!

Version 2.2pre4 is up. I'm just sorta hacking away slowly on this stuff, so don't expect any big changes. I have gone through and made a list of things to tackle and it's pretty long. New to this version:

- Fixed Print Preview page Orientation buttons to use new button style.
- Fixed all textboxes to use new border highlight.
- Fixed native video controls to remove new button styles.

Stratini Padded 2.2 is now public. I had a pretty long list of details to finish before finalizing it, so I'm not listing them in great detail here, but a few of the things I touched were:

- Added highlights below the navigation icons to make them feel sunken into the toolbar.
- Finished up work on the Print Preview dialog.
- Addressed some issues with Sidebars.
- Added very limited compatibility for the 4.0 Add-ons Manager tab.
- Fixed several bugs with trees.
- Fixed preference tabs to match main UI tabs.
- Removed borders from Media, Updates and Downloads minibuttons.

there is a small delay when opening links to new tab or opening blank tabs. this could just be me on my end but i have delete prefs.js to make sure it was not a custom setting, disabled all addons, and tested this with the default theme, stratini, and stratini padded.

love these themes btw.

My standard OS-colored themes do not do anything that should cause any delay in opening new or blank tabs. There is a minor delay in one of my dark themes due to the fact that Firefox uses the same underlying structure to build the main browser panel as the options tabs panels, so themeing the options tabs panels can cause a weird painting delay in loading the main browser. But as I said, my OS-colored themes do not do this. If there is a delay caused by using *any* custom styles for the options tabs panels then that would be a problem in the way Firefox handles themes.

Stratini Padded 2.3.2 is ready for folks to try out. It's almost 100% there for Firefox 4.0 compatibility.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... /versions/

One of the most noticeable things in these versions is the security button in the identity box. Regardless of whether Mozilla thinks the padlock is misleading to users, users don't know how to interpret a blue or green box. Also, Firefox 4.0 has NO way of showing broken encryption, so I consider this very important feature-wise.

I'm trying out this theme at the moment and noticed a couple of graphical bugs.

1st one is when opening the identity box it has a weird black border around it.
Image

2nd is the Edit this bookmark dialog, it has a thick grey border.

Apart from those things it's looking very good.
This is on linux btw.

Well isn't that interesting.

Problem #1 I am guessing is caused by Linux's problems with transparent PNGs... If you can point me in the direction of a theme that uses the "arrowpanel" in Linux without this problem I would appreciate it.

Problem #2 is because Mozilla has recycled the old popups and made them look like arrowpanels in some cases and I just missed this one. Incidentally, Problem #1 used to be a popup as well and I'm wondering if the same black line will appear around the Bookmarking panel when I remove the border.

I'll peek into a few other themes and see if I can sort this out. I'm beginning to think I should just abandon the arrow panels because they have a host of other problems like they don't align with things were they should.

Thanks Gavin, I'll have a look in there then. It looks like in this theme the "shadow" around the arrow panel has been removed, probably specifically to avoid this problem.

Ok. I've removed the shadow from around the arrowpanels... honestly I think they look goofy anyway. I gave my arrowpanels a whole new custom style and color, and fixed the alignment issues that make them point to the wrong locations! I've also fixed the All-In-One-Sidebar buttons which was reported to me by email as well as made the tabs touch the top of the screen in Fullscreen mode to match the behavior in Maximize mode.

Let me know if version 2.3.4 fixes your problems:

Both the Identity box and the Edit bookmark box have that thick grey border around them now like in my 2nd screenshot.
The blue colour is a nice touch though.
