PLEASE NOTE: This thread has been superceded by a new one for the new Portable Firefox 1.0.4 release. Please download the new version and address any questions and issues there.
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=267408

Portable Firefox is a completely self-contained, portable, USB/removable drive-friendly Firefox package. This arose out of the mother of all mozillaZine threads back in June starting with Firefox 0.8+ which added the -profile switch.

EDIT: For now, Portable Firefox is Windows-only. But we'd LOVE some help getting something similar running on Linux and Mac OS X.

UPDATE: I've updated Portable Firefox to the new 1.0 Final release. It is available on the project page:

Regards,
John

You have not spesified what OS it runs on, so I guess its for all of the three major ones!
MS Windows, GNU/Linux and Mac OS X...

I would like to test the Mac OS X version! ;)

Ack... sorry...

Right now it is Windows-only.

I'd LOVE to get a Mac or Linux version going. Our eventual goal would be to get all 3 able to work off of one USB key with the same profile... making it the ULTIMATE portable browser.

Has anyone gotten it to work on a USB stick with Linux or Mac OS X yet?

If you link to the source of the launcher, it's highly likely that Linux and MacOS fans will port it for you. The internal Firefox process should work the same.

I've got the the full source included with both the Portable Firefox Package (big download) and the Portable Firefox Launcher 0.0.2 ZIP (teeny download) on the project page. It uses the Nullsoft Scriptable Installer System (GPLed) which, at the moment, is Windows-only. Though, it looks like the next release will support POSIX platforms.

It's showing "rev. 2" with a date of Aug 6, yet you are only posting now.

Is there a newer version not listed there, or were you just late in posting here?

This topic interests me.

Thanks.

I'd only been posting to that original 19-page thread this whole time. I just wanted to get a bit of extra testing in, outside of our usual group, before it goes live on mozdev.

John

Oh, this is the first time I saw that page is why I asked.

I'd suggest waiting a couple days for the PR candidate to come out and base off of that before going out live with it.

Actually, we'll be keeping 0.9.3 as the main download of it until 1.0 is released in December. I'll be releasing test versions of every PR and RC release as well. We've been working on this since June and following the Firefox releases since 0.8+ (the debut of the -profile switch). This is more for testing of the launcher with extensions. The launcher re-writes the chrome.rdf to make extension paths relative, so you can take your extensions with you.

You already are a tester, effectively. Just report any problems you have.

Yeah, what Cusser said. If you notice any issues, please report them in this thread, in the other thread or to me directly. I'll be setting up the Portable Firefox mailing list and newsgroup soon as well.

John
