CACert Root SSL Certificate

Post by Phrost »

There is a growing need to secure servers via SSL/TLS, and, in many
cases, self signed certificates aren't appropriate. CAcert's aim is to
cover the more traditional applications such as web and email, but is
also extensible enough to be used in IRC and many wireless
applications. Current commercial offerings are discriminatory toward
individuals and unincorporated bodies, due largely to their high
cost along with the practice of proving domain ownership through proof
of business registrations, and articles of incorporation.

The number of issued CAcert certificates grows daily, and number of
people relying on these CAcert certificates is a multiple of that. We
are not without troubles, though; continued growth is going to be
difficult without having a root certificate in mainstream applications
like web browsers and email programs.

We believe that having our root certificate included in your browser
would be beneficial to both of our organisations. Since your browser
would be the first to ship with CACert root certificate included, it
would be listed as our recommended browser. We see a huge potential
for cross referrals - our users choosing your browser, recommending it
to friends who use personal certificates as well as colleges and other
not for profit institutions; your users having instant access to a
free certificate authority for their websites.

I'd like to thank you all in advance for your consideration and I look
forward to the possibility of working with you in the future. Please
contact support@cacert.org with any additional questions or concerns you may have regarding this system.

I believe, after reviewing and using first hand, the CACert Certificate Authority system, I find this system to be fabulous. I would like to request that the root certificate key be included with Mozilla Firebird to help both Mozilla and CACert. This would make a wonderful addition for everyone.

I hope im not the only person seeing the benfit of implmenting cacert serivces in mozilla. A free alternative to a Centralised trusted Certification Authority, which is being used world wide and growing quickly. A option for companies in deploying a 'free as in beer' altnernative to a ever demanding requirement of trusted authentication on a thinner then thin budget, Besides the option for a trusted service into wireless Athentication within 802.11X rotational Wep authentication which is a new means of security standards in the world of upcomming wireless communications....,Cacert is constantly implementing new standards for the ever demanding requirement of trusted Authentication. I can only see Cacert as a benfit to which should be implemented into Mozilla, which will be another YET needed feature over Internet explorere and just something which will benfit the community at large .
I hope to see more support for a non-profit organisation like cacert that offer's services that usually cost a 'arm and leg' to companies in demand .

The thing to do would be to get a Bugzilla account and file an RFE.

I would also like to see CACert Root SSL certificate support included with Firefox by default.
