Importing Safari Bookmarks into Firefox

Post by pyoung »

Oh my gosh - Firefox is so incredible - I love it and thank you [the royal you of course] for all of this hard work! But here's my query --> I have been using Safari and have hundreds of URLs stored... is there anyway I can import them into Firefox? I tried using the "File --> Inport" wizard and actually nothing shows up in that window...

any assistance would be most welcome!

Cheers -

Yes, there is.

First you must have the "Debug Menu" enabled for Safari. If you haven't already, here's how:

There is an option on the "Debug Menu" to export Safari's bookmarks. They are exported as a "Netscape-type HTML Bookmark File". Save the file somewhere convenient.

Open Firefox. Now click through these options in Firefox:

Bookmarks > Manage Bookmarks > File > Import

In the dialog box "Import Bookmarks From" check the radio button next to "From File". Now make the path to where you saved your Safari Bookmark File.

Damian,
You rock. I just found this via Google, the Safari Debug Menu/Bookmarks import method is much easier than using a third party app, plus now I know how another debug menu feature works.
Thanks,
Sam

Never mind. It's a bug. See:

Could someone walk me through the process of adding the line on Terminal to open the debug menu? I have no experience with Terminal. When I copied the line of code into the Terminal window and then opened Safari, I didn't see the new menu.

I'd love to be able to export my many Safari bookmarks. This sounds like an easy solution, but ignorance can stop anything.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

quit safari and copy the line below into terminal

defaults write com.apple.safari IncludeDebugMenu 1

press return

quit terminal

start up safari > go to "debug" on top menu > export bookmarks > dialogbox will ask for the place to put it. I put it in a special archive folder > save

from Firefox "bookmarks" menu > manage bookmarks > Bookmarks manager opens > go to top menu > under File > import... > select "from file" > click next > and so on.

ok.
