How can I configure Thunderbird to allow me to use any of the chosen accounts to send my email. This is something which is very helpful for me in MS Outlook.

Use case:
I use different SMTP accounts to send email addresses. Also they serve me as backup when tbere is any problem in my main smtp account.

Also in Outlook when I reply to an email it automatically uses the reply to be routed through the same account from which it came. Can I have that facility in Thunderbird?

How can I have multiple accounts setup yet disable some of them for synchronization?

Use case:
When in office I have a mercury server which gets all the emails from different accounts for me. So I just connet to a single account. However when on road that server is not accessible. So I directly connect to the different pop accounts from my email client to fetch the emails. Normally such accounts are present in my outlook client, yet disabled. However on the road I enable them and disable my corporate intranet email server. How can I do this in Thunderbird?

Well for your first question, you can add SMTP servers at Tools>Account Settings>Outgoing Server (SMTP). After having added all your SMTP servers, you can go to each of your email accounts go to Tools>account Settings>server settings...then click the advanced button and then go to the SMTP tab. There you can configure the account to use a particular SMTP server.

As for auto selecting the account for reply, on my end, it seems to do this automatically.

For your second question, go to Tools>account settings>Server settings and click the advanced button. In the POP tab you'll find the appropriate checkbox.

Cheers!

My Tools->Account Settingts->Server ... Advanced dialog doesn't let me temporarily disable the account. It just lets me choose where the Inbox will be.

What is your definition of an account being disabled? Not checking for and downloading mail?

Tools | Account Settings | [acount name] | Server Settings.

Uncheck the appropriate boxes.

Maybe your Thunderbird has it. I haven't a box for checking disable account in that location.

Makai guy means unchecking the boxes that tell TB to check for new messages.

As for sending you can use the Outgoing Server settings 'advanced tab' for creating as many smtp server settings as you wish. You then need the 'Show SMTP Username' extension so that you can use the smtp server setting you want to use for sending emails.

(PS: Give yourself a 'name' (and stick to it) when posting otherwise the thread gets ridiculously confused identifying who is talking about what problem!)

What he means is to uncheck all of the options that control retrieving messages. For example, clearing the checkbox for checking messages at startup, checking every x minutes and automatically downloading.

I would like to also disable some accounts.

The Account Settings -> Server Settings -> Uncheck "Check for new messages" and uncheck "Automatically download new messages"
doesn't really work because I often use the "Get Mail -> Get All new Messages" menu item which has nothing to do with these account settings.
What we need is just a disable/enable account feature.

This is useful for those of us who have heaps of email accounts and want to disable one for awhile.

Gotta love those old dead threads that spring back to life.

To completely disable an account, easiest way might be to just alter the server address to something invalid. Maybe add a capital X to the end to make it very clear what you need to remove to restore it to the proper server name. Might give you a pain-in-the-[select appropriate anatomical reference here] error message every time, though.

If you have the account set to download to Local Folders, you can choose whether to include it in "Get all new mail".

I too would like a disable/enable feature. I have about 4 imap accounts, it would be nice to toggle one on and off, in which off mode not only prevents the downloading of new emails, but also keeps you from seeing associated mail and folders. The iPhone makes excellent use of such a feature for example.

Start a new topic please. This one is ancient and is about a totally different version of Thunderbird. Locking.
