<a id="intro"></a>Introduction
Many people experience problems with embedded Real media in Firefox. Because of improper coding of a website, coding specific to Internet Explorer or a failed installation of Real player and its associated plugins, pages with embedded Real media often fail.
If you experience problems with a page containing embedded Real Media, whether it be a missing plugin warning or a page that simply fails to work as expected, this guide should help you remedy the problem.
<a id="install"></a>Real Player Download and Installation
The first step is downloading Real player. You have two choices: Real Player 10.5 and Real Alternative 1.39 (or higher). Both players have been tested and function correctly with Firefox.
Before installing, remove any older versions which may be on your system. Download one of the following: Close all instances of Firefox and any other unnecessary programs and run the setup program.
If you are installing Real Alternative, make sure that the "Firefox/Mozilla/Netscape/Opera Plugin" is checked when selecting which components to install.
<a id="verify""></a>Plug-in Verification
After the Real Player installation is complete:
- Launch Firefox
- Enter about:plugins in the location bar (address bar)
RealPlayer(tm) G2 LiveConnect-Enabled Plug-In (32-bit) should be listed: - You should have an entry similar to the above in about:plugins
- If the Plugin is not listed, refer to the <a href="#trouble">Troubleshooting</a> section.
Many pages with embedded Real media fail to work correctly. Specifically, the following file types fail to play: .ra, .rm and .ram. The most common cause for these file types to fail is incorrect coding on the web page itself. If the type attribute is not specified as "audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin" in the html embed or object tag, ra, rm and ram file types will not play.
The modified plugin is a work-around for this specific problem. Instead of relying solely on the "audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin" mime type, the plugin recognizes the additional Real file types, enabling pages missing the type attribute to function.
*Note*
Real Alternative 1.32 and later includes the modified plugin. If you have installed this version, you can skip this section and advance to the <a href="#test">Modified Plug-in Test</a>.
The modified plugin is intended for use with <a href="#install">Real Player 10.5</a> only- using it with an older or newer version may cause Firefox or even your computer to crash, so I recommend installing that release if you haven't already.
Follow these steps to install the modified plugin:
- Download the modified Real Player Plug-In to a convenient location such as your desktop:
Alternate Download: Close all instances of Firefox. - Navigate to the Firefox Plugins folder. By default, the location is C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\Plugins\
- Make a backup of the original nppl3260.dll:
- Right click in an empty location of the window and select "New > Folder".
- Name the newly created folder "Backup".
- Left click and Drag nppl3260.dll into the new folder.
- Restart Firefox
- Enter about:plugins in the address bar, the original plugin should not be listed. If it is, it's probably being picked up from the Realplayer program directory which is fine.
- Close Firefox
- Extract the modified nppl3260.dll from the downloaded ZIP file.
- Drag the modified nppl3260.dll into the plugins folder.
To verify that the modified plugin is installed correctly:
- Launch Firefox.
- Enter about:plugins in the location bar (address bar)
You should see the RealPlayer(tm) G2 LiveConnect-Enabled Plug-In listed.

The additional file and mime types should be listed as shown in Image 2. - Test Real Player here: Real Player Modified Plugin Test.
<a id="trouble"></a>Troubleshooting
If you are still having problems, go over the steps again to ensure that they have been followed correctly.
Perform these additional steps if you are unable to rectify the problem:
- Verify the proper functioning of Real Player:
- Try playing a local real media file on your system.
- Test a website with embedded Real Media using Internet Explorer.
- Download and reinstall Real Player if it does not function correctly with local files or with Internet Explorer.
- Ensure that the <a href="#mp">modified plugin</a> is installed correctly and verified though about:plugins.
If Real Player has been re-installed, the steps for installing the <a href="#mp">modified plugin</a> must be repeated.
- Windows Version
- Firefox Version
- Difficulties with any of the above steps
- A link to problem websites
- Any other relevant information
- Copy the original file from:
- C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\Browser\Plugins
- C:\Program Files\Real Alternative\Browser\Plugins
The above paths are the default and may be different if Real Player was installed in a user selected location.
- Download the original: (Zip Archive)<<
Alternate Download:>>Original nppl3260.dll (Zip Archive)<<
