Recently, one of our members asked: "Is it okay to post email addresses openly in the forums?"

No -- You should avoid posting EMAIL addresses publicly in any forum. The key reason is that automatically controlled SPAMbots are constantly scanning published web pages looking for "@" characters.

When an "@" character is found on a non-secure page, the spambot will determine whether it's an email address and add it to the collection. Email address buttons and Private messaging provide more security. Our own registered email accounts are also secure.

If you've done this in the past, the likelihood spambots finding "@" is very low due to the volume of published pages on our site. Still, I thought it was worthwhile to share this for better protection of your privacy and email accounts.

For the hard of reading: this goes for anything online. Then you're fine until someone with your email address in their address book does something stupid like getting some virus. :p

If you're the original poster and you posted while logged in, you should be able to go back and edit it out.

The poster sees an [edit] link in the lower right corner of the post.

If you want to post your email, replace the @ symbol with the word "at."

Instead of billgates@microsoft.com, put billgates[at]microsoft.com.

Somehow, any form of intentionally obfuscated, munged, or otherwise impeded address rankles my personal aesthetic sense... I guess my "pro-accessibility" mindset/religion doesn't like anything that intentionally makes it more difficult to use something.

If one has to post an eMail address, it should be in the common (at) form - that way it´s not crippled beyond recognition, yet unusable for simple programs.

However, on most fora there is a "Private Message" function - which is just as good, if not better, than eMail.
After all, it´s usually just one click to send a PM, but many clicks to send a mail...
HTML is defined by the W3C, not by a browser. <- I reject HTML5 for that reason. Making the fox guard the henhouse "because he's always been there anyway" isn't a good idea.
