After creating new profile, I lost bookmarks & extension

Post by richards1052 »

I've been having problems with FF conflicting with rich text editors and Mozilla support suggested that I create a new profile. I did this & it seems to have fixed the conflict (at least from what I can tell in a preliminary test). But the new profile no longer points to my bookmarks, cookies, extensions & other personalized config data. Is there any way to regain those associations (or at least some of them)? If so, can you give me detailed instructions where to find my old config data & how to point it to the right location.

You can copy some of this stuff from the old profile to the new profile. I recommend the following files:

bookmarks.html <== your bookmarks!
cookies.txt <== cookie permissions
signons.txt and key3.db <== saved logins/passwords
chrome\userChrome.css and userContent.css <== custom browser appearance and behavior settings

Since you were having some conflicts with some programs, I won't recommend you copy the mimeTypes.rdf file which contains your file type associations. You are, of course, free to try, but it may get you back to where you were with the old profile. I also recommend you stay away from user.js and prefs.js.

Extensions and themes will need to be reinstalled.

All file copying from one profile folder needs to be done with Firefox closed.

Profile info is here:

Thanks so much for that great great advice. I found all the files easily & copied them from the old profile to the new thanks to yr. clear suggestions. When I reopened FF all my old bookmarks & cookies were in place. A lifesaver!

smsmith: I hope you're still following this thread. I just had another FF 1.0.3 corruption issue & had to create a new profile. But this time, I copied the files you suggest above from the application data folder into my new profile folder. But when I open FF using the new profile none of the data (bookmarks, cookies, etc.) from these copied files appears. I'm doing something wrong but can't figure out what it is...
