Good job! Any chance you implement IPTC as well?

Could anyone tell me what is exif? I did a quick search and it seems to talk about image format or something.

EXIF: EXIF stands for Exchangeable Image File Format, and is a standard for storing interchange information in image files, especially those using JPEG compression. Most digital cameras now use the EXIF format

Practical example! :D
Find a page with digital photos, like this --> http://www.viaggiatorionline.com/images.asp?id=396
These are the properties oh the photo

Nice, I've been using View EXIF (http://ak.no-ip.com/EXIF/index_en.htm) so far but yours is less intrusive.
Can you add an option to copy EXIF info to the clipboard or make it selectable so that one doesn't have to copy the fields one by one?

Problems with Nikon EXIF data?

Post by jpwilkins »

It doesn't seem to work with EXIF data from my Nikon D100. Check the sample at http://jwilkins.com/DSC_0033.JPG

Photoshop sees the data fine, so does Windows explorer, but Fxif doesn't.

I don't know what that is. Can you link me some info on it?

aab: I could probably do something like that, but what's the use case? Do people really copy all of the info a lot?

jpwilkins: I'll have a look at it tomorrow. I don't know why it wouldn't work. If you can run Firefox with the -console option, it should show any errors that occur while trying to read the EXIF data.

Hi Ted. Briefly, it's somewhat similar to exif but lets you store date, caption, category, keywords etc... Many softwares read and edit iptc as well as exif (photoshop, xnview, exifer, irfanview...) and Google's Picasa uses it for captioning.
There's a rather good description: http://www.breezesys.com/BreezeBrowser/help/iptc.htm
Specification: http://www.iptc.org/IIM/
An extractor in perl: http://multipart-mixed.com/photo/iptc.html

Folks at digital photography forums (http://www.dpreview.com/forums/ and others) almost always post EXIF data with their pictures so that others can judge which settings are good/bad for any particular situation or object. Most people don't have any kind of browser based EXIF viewer so it does help to have all that information as plaintext.

It'd be nice to have but not strictly necessary. You did good job anyway :-)

Oops, found a typo in my code. I'll release a fixed version today. Nice picture!
