Opening files via url: file://

Post by Pombaer »

I' m using a searchengine which is indexing a remote server for a Intranet search and delivers hints like file:////server/share/directory/myfile.doc . When clicking on this url in Firefox nothing happens, in IE the Document is opened. The problem seams that the url must look like: file:///// (5x / ) instead of file://// (4x /). Now i don't know if this is an effect of firefox or the searchengine and it's delivered URL.

Try only three slashes:
file:///server/share/directory/myfile.doc

You need to open about:config in the address bar of Firefox, scroll down to security.checkloadurl and set it to false. For security reasons the ability to open local files has been disabled by default. Also, set the link to file://///example/example/file.xxx. This will not hamper IE from opening the link either. Hope this Helps.
