When I perform a google search or go to sites like wikipedia, firefox will freeze for sometimes up to 30 second before I can use the browser again. This is because the windows file csrss.exe is taking up 100% of my CPU resources. I have been hopelessly dealing with this problem months. I have been using this browser since 2002 (when it was called Phoenix) and the problem first appeared rather spontaneously with Firefox 1.0.1 (after using that version problem free for over a month), continuing with 1.0.2, then 1.0.3, and now with 1.0.4.

I have tried a full virus scan, ad-aware, spybot, hijack this, MS spyware, and all have returned nothing. I have performed fresh installs, removed all extensions, turned off update checking, javascript, and many other options to no avail. It appears that the freezing usually occurs when loading multiple images but disabling images doesn't help either.

Have you tried running Firefox in safe mode, to determine if your FF profile is at fault?

Same computer since 2002? It's possible that you may benefit by updating your display driver -- usually free from the manufacturer's website. (display driver manufacturer, that is)

Same problem here, this problem has plagued me not only on the latest release of 1.0.4 but since .9.

Windows XP SP2 and has occured on XP, and XP Sp1. I have reinstalled windows twice during interim FF versions and have still experienced this problem. I have defragged, restarted, uninstalled, reinstalled FF, etc.

Google is the most repeatable since its the most visited for me, but I get it randomly on other sites. Seeing the exact same issue as Terrible Hand.

It's driving me batty.

I got a new computer earlier this year. Windows XP SP2, Athlon XP 3000, Geforce 4 MX. The problem has only happened on this computer.

I never thought it could be the display drivers. I know from a short description that csrss manages graphical commands so it may be videocard related. What card does everyone else with the problem use?

I'm having the same problem too. I updated my Video driver and am still having the same problem. It's driving me crazy to wait so long for some of the websites to load. It seems to happen a lot on pages that I visit often. I have an Nvidia GeForce 4 but I don't really think thats the problem. I'm not sure what else it could be but if anyone has any other suggestions I would really appreciate it!

I am having the exact same problem! Everytime Firefox hangs, sure enough, theres csrss.exe using 99% of my CPU. Then after ending the Firefox task, csrss.exe is back to zero CPU usage. I cannot for the life of me find any solutions for this no matter where I look. Help?

See if the KB article from M$ helps: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=555021

I'm using a 9500Pro Vidcard and have not seen any high usage of CPU other than when using heavy amounts of flash, or a badly written java application.

So, the above article cites a corrupt WINDOWS profile as the cause for that particular issue? This solution is for internet explorer though... theres no mention of firefox. Hmm... it would be a b*tch to delete then re-create my windows profile too... Any other suggestions?

I read that MS support page before but didn't think much of it as csrss never gives me problem right-clicking or doing anything other than using Firefox. There's a different profile on this computer. It belongs to someone else; he uses a password. I'll ask him to let me run Firefox on it for an hour or so and report back if there are any problems. The profile I use and have problems with is the default "owner" one.

I doubt this is the problem though. If the poster above reinstalled windows, that surely would've restored his profile wouldn't it?
