opening of a new window when downloading a file

I've been doing a lot of searching in google and the help, but i can't find the solution for this problem.

Everytime i click on a link (for example a pdf or doc), mozilla opens a new (empty) window and then starts the proper application to open the file. But why does it have to open a new window for that? It's very annoying. Is there any way to prevent it from opening a new window?
